Help Will the Greyhound’s owners after he survived a horrific infection, but at the cost of a massive and unforeseen vet bill.

As best as the veterinary professionals can tell, Will inhaled a small foreign body, such as a grass seed, sometime in February or early March. Only small, it was to go on to nearly kill him.

It first migrated through his lungs, setting up a massive infection in his chest cavity. Major surgery was the only option, including the removal of a heavily damaged lung lobe. 9 litres of saline was required to flush the chest cavity during the procedure.

Unfortunately the foreign body wasn’t discovered, and in the subsequent weeks it became clear that it had continued its journey, through the diaphragm and into the abdominal cavity, setting up a second massive infection. Another major operation was Will’s only option. On entering, the surgeon discovered Will’s internal organs attached together in a web of fibrous adhesions created as a result of the infection, rendering them immobile and revealing the cause of his considerable pain.

Will is entering the 4th month of his illness and is now recovering. His owners have always been driven by the prognoses given to them by Will’s vets and the quality of life they advise he will have. Recovering as predicted, Will has every chance of going on to have a full life and continuing to volunteer in the community as part of the SPCA/St John’s therapy outreach programme for years to come. Sticking with Will through a difficult diagnosis requiring extensive tests and 2 major surgeries in this way has come at a high cost to his family well in excess of $20k.
