A terminal cancer diagnosis is devastating for the parent of any young child, but when both parents are affected it is truly unimaginable, yet this is the situation Matt and his wife Kathy find themselves in.
Shortly after the birth of their only son Wilson, Kathy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma and given only months to live. Research of every available treatment option lead them to Sydney where the tumour from Kathy’s first major surgery was turned into a vaccine specifically targeted at her Melanoma. This has bought Kathy an incredible reprieve from the ravages of the disease, but the vaccine has since run out. They are aware that her Melanoma can come back at any stage, but remain positive.
Now after a brief illness, Kathy’s husband Matt has been diagnosed with terminal Lung Cancer. As you can imagine, their world has been turned upside down - yet again. This was particularly devastating for Matt who prides himself on living a fit and healthy lifestyle. The cancer has already spread and his prognosis is not good. He is currently receiving Chemo as well as participating in a Lung Cancer drug trial. He has been told that there is no cure for the Cancer and that his current treatment is palliative, but nevertheless they hope for a miracle.
Though Kathy has left her full time job, when time allows she works some reduced hours from home. This enables her to give Matt the continual care and attention he requires. They are taking each day as it comes. Matt and Kathy have amazing support from family and friends and we are all totally committed to getting through this.
It has taken a ton of persuasion for Matt and Kathy to agree to us setting up this GiveaLittle page as they are definitely not ones to ask for anything. They do appreciate however that there are people out there who genuinely want to help, and for that, we are sincerely grateful.
Matt, Kathy and Wilson have a long and stressful road ahead; the Medical community have been amazing and they are both in very good hands. Extra financial support will enable Matt and Kathy to explore all avenues of treatment both here and overseas. Of particular interest to them is Keytruda, a drug that has shown very good results abroad for Melanoma and is also being trialled for Lung Cancer. Vitamin C is another more recently talked about prospect in New Zealand.
We are not sure what the future holds, but what we are certain of is that Matt, Kathy and Wilson along with their family and friends, will never give up the fight.
Our sincere thanks go to the Spark Foundation for providing this incredible site and making a world of difference to all concerned.
As part of a loving family, we will ensure that anything and everything that can be done for Matt, will be done. We will provide as much financial support for Matt, Kathy and Wilson to assist in day to day living and for any alternative treatments/options for Matt that may be available both in NZ and overseas.
Thank you... 14 June 2016
Yesterday was everything I could have hoped for in a send off for Matt. The number of people that turned up to celebrate Matt's life was overwhelming.
Everything was perfect - the weather, the venue - even the snow on the Tararuas!
I am incredibly grateful to all of you that attended and the outpouring of love and support from everyone over these last 12 months.
I wish I could contact you all individually - please accept this heartfelt thank you from Wilson and I, we are so blessed to have you all in our lives.
