Fight for Sustainable Transport in Nelson

Help us fight those who want to bulldoze the community of the year with a new arterial road.

Nelson / Tasman

We are fighting to implement enticing options to car commuting in Nelson, rather than building a third arterial. This new road would cleave the poorer Nelson South and Victory communities, in return for a minor improvement in existing roads past wealthy peoples apartments.

The proposed route goes within metres of a low decile primary school, alongside an intermediate school and 3 childcare centres, through the most air polluted valley in Nelson. On the existing route the air pollution is not trapped in a valley but free to go out to sea.

This potential new road was exhaustively investigated with the 2010-11 Arterial Study which found there was no case for building the road in the foreseeable future. Nelson traffic numbers have been flat for 10 years since well before the global financial crisis, despite record regional population growth. Peak hour delays although frustrating for those who choose to car commute are 4 minutes peak hour delay, 7.5 minutes peak 15 minutes.

The effort to bulldoze this new road is well funded, those of us wanting more sane transport solutions are struggling to fund the printing of flyers, T shirts, badges and bike stickers. Please give a little - every dollar helps!

What we need is the following:

Flyers - A5 colour 1 side, b&w other (10,000) $1407

Printed T shirts (100) $1545

Badges (600) $900

Bumper Stickers $416

Posters A2 colour laminated (50) $634

Transport (petrol) for door knockers and flyer letterbox dropper distribution $98

Total $5,000

Nelsust - Nelson Transport Strategy Group Inc.'s involvement (page creator)

Nelsust is an incorporated society that has been fighting for Sustainable Transport Solutions for Nelson since 2000. We took the then Transit and Nelson City Council to the environment court in 2004 and won, with the commissioners concluding this was "fundamentally the wrong place for a state highway". This has not stopped would-be community destroyers from coming back time and again to try and push this road through.

About us

The Nelson Transport Strategy Group (NELSUST) Inc. is an incorporated society with a wide transport vision for the good of the whole region. We have been working on getting enticing transport options to car commuting. We don't aim to force people out of cars, just give them attractive options to do something better for the city and the planet than car commuting. We are pushing for a city for people, a vibrant Nelson, not a city choked with cars.

We are currently fighting (yet again) another push to bulldoze a third arterial route though Nelson South and Victory Communities and seeking contributions to help with this campaign.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
