As part of The Altus Resource Trust My huband daughter and I go over to Vanuatu yearly to provide physiotherapy to people with disabilities
Otago
In Vanuatu there are only two physiotherapists based in the hospital for all the regions. They do not have the capacity to go out to the villages and work with people who have disabilities. When we go over to Vanuatu we work with the Vanuatu Society for Disabled People. Through them we are able to identify people in the villages with disabilities. We are able to pro ide those people with equipment, therapy programmes and education for their entire family. With just a little education and equipment we have seen children be able to attend school and even start to walk for the first time. We are planning a trip to Vanuatu this October. We already have some equipment ready to be sent over. In the equipment pile is a hoist for a young woman with muscular dystrophy who is relying on a small couisin to lift her into her chair. There is also a glucometer and strips for a father and daughter who have both lost limbs because of their inability to measure their blood sugar levels and give themselves the correct amount of insulin.
I have been involved for the last 5 years because there is such a need that I have seen. It is very rewarding and also very hard at times but I feel very blessed to be able to help as a physiotherapist.
The funds will be used for the hireage of a vehicle big enough to take us and the equipment out to the villiages, storage of the shipped equipment, accommodation.
