We are a passionate community sharing stories and knowledge about everything West Coast and we have outgrown Facebook

Wellington

We are a passionate community sharing stories and knowledge about everything West Coast. We started with a massively successful Facebook page but we need a new platform that can save and share this content more reliably.

West Coast New Zealand History is a group of over 14,000 individuals spread around the world. This group is interested in the history of the New Zealand West Coast and until recently have been combining information on a Facebook page.

As the group grew, we found much of the information collected was either dropping off or very difficult to find so we went in search of another web based solution. We found the product Recollect, which met our community based requirements whilst keeping our information safe. Unfortunately unlike Facebook, Recollect had a price tag.

The donations received will go towards paying for the website/platform costs which include set up and ongoing support costs. We are not looking to make a profit or operate as a charity, as a group we just want to share our passion and the information we have and find it in a manner that is usable by all.

Many schools are now referring to our site as a source of historical reference plus we are receiving requests for more information from overseas, an example being an image of a ship, the Barque Irene, was put online and a communication was received shortly after from Norway saying the ship was one of theirs and they had always wondered what had become of it.

We have already set up our website/platform http://westcoast.recollect.co.nz/ and are in the process of transitioning the information from Facebook to Recollect.

West Coast History still needs your support!  20 October 2020

We are reopening our page and we still need your support! All funds donated so far have helped us to keep this site running.

We are a passionate community sharing stories and knowledge about everything West Coast. We started with a massively successful Facebook page back in 2014 which we quickly outgrew and needed a new platform that can save and share this content more reliably, hence the move to Recollect.

West Coast New Zealand History is a group of over 19,000 individuals spread around the world. Our supporters include the mayor of the Grey District. This group is interested in the history of the New Zealand West Coast and until recently has been combining information on a Facebook page. Since it was launched on Recollect , 22 May 2015, our site has approximately 25,000 visitors per month who view in excess of 80,000 pages per month

We are not looking to make a profit or operate as a charity, as a group we just want to share our passion and the information we have and find it in a manner that is usable by all.

Many places including schools are now referring to our site as a source of historical reference plus we are receiving requests for more information from overseas, an example being an image of a ship, the Barque Irene, was put online and a communication was received shortly after from Norway saying the ship was one of theirs and they had always wondered what had become of it.

We appreciate your ongoing support!

I am interesting in researching my family history. Daily Family. Hoteliers, Royal Hotel and Criterion Hotel during the mid to late 1800's into the 1900's. My Mother Eva Daily was part of Prosperity Players, a Vaudeville Group back in the day .She was also a valued member of Trumans on Mackay Street up until 1939. I have a lovely write up of one of her performances with Molly Ryan. "Stepping to the Band" Sadly no date on the Newspaper clipping. Syd Daily, my Uncle served 32 years with the Westport Brigade some under the guidance of his Father John Daily, Superintendent Westport Brigade. I would love to know more of the history of my Grandparents and Daily family, I have scant history information and would love to hear personal stories or anything related to the family, photos of the hotels, or Daily Family relatives.
