Amy-Rose is a 21-year-old with Alopecia Areata. She would like to raise funds for a wig that will help her dance again.
Nationwide
Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. It can grow back sometimes, but often soon falls out again. I lost 90% of my scalp hair, including my eyelashes and 1 eyebrow. And at the age of 20, I was wearing wigs.
Before I lost my hair, I danced almost 5 days a week since I was 3-years-old. I used to do Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and Tap. I had to stop dancing, because I couldn't do it in synthetic wigs or head scarves. I didn't feel comfortable dancing without anything on my head either, which means I haven't danced for 2 years.
I saved long and hard while I was working, and used the remainder of my government subsidy to buy my first vacuum human hair wig. However, with the mixture of it being very long and heavy, and my slight hair regrowth—when tied up it becomes unstuck. (the only time it stays on properly is if it's left loose which isn't appropriate for dance). So I was back to square one.
The short, light Freedom wig that will hopefully help me dance is going to cost $3700. With all my government subsidy wasted on terrible synthetic wigs and my current wig, and no income as I'm now a student, getting that amount of money seems almost impossible.
Dancing is something that relieves my stress, it's something that I'm passionate about, and helps me deal with depression. Any help would be appreciated so much, this wig will change my life so much, and help me get back to doing triple pirouettes.
