Sorry for delay - I've been down with the flu (11 nasty weeks...)

Skylah is now 5 weeks old, 6 weeks on Wednesday.

She spent the first two weeks at Christchurch Womans Hospital in neonatal for two weeks - most of that time under the blue lights.

She has had two blood transfusions since she was born. What's happening is her bone marrow is not producing enough of her own red cells. This makes it necessary for the blood transfusions.

The process means going to the hospital for a blood test. Returning to the hospital the next day for the transfusion. The process takes about 3 or more hours. Skylah is coping well with the process as is mum and dad.

Scott and Hanna would like to thank you all for your support during the tough times. Although Scott is still having to take time off work for these appointments it is a little easier than the times in Auckland. Your help was very much appreciated.

    - a grateful Nana

She weighed in at 6 lb 4 oz.

Skylah has been taken to neonatal unit where when they have test results in she can begin whatever treatment needed.

We have no details of what they could be at this stage.

We will update as they come in.

Thanks for all your prayers and support. It has helped the kids along this journey.

  • One week to go

I've been down with flu. Sorry behind in updates. Hanna and Scott after the adventures of being kicked off a flight at last minute eventually arrived a few hours later in Auckland. Some pilots regardless of medical approval don't like having eight month pregnant women on board....

There were a few problems trying to prepare for the blood transfusion but thankfully managed to get a good line in. I think Hanna was beginning to feel like a pin cushion...

Last Monday they went to Christchurch Woman's and they explained the induction process to them and gave them a tour of the neonatal area. They now know the different teams that will be with them. So many that sadly I can't join them. Too many in the room.

Blood for not only baby but mum will be on standby. Now we wait.

Baby's induction date is set for Monday.

Despite the risks from blood to placenta probs we are looking forward to bringing you good news AND a standard picture of our wee girl.

On behalf of Hanna and Scott and grandparents Judith and Neil Wick and Martin and Linda Butler we cannot thank you enough for your support to date.

After baby is born we will have a better idea of what support he kids will need over the next few months.

    Until next week..... Xxxxxxxxxx

  • DRAMA'S

      3 August 2015

    Well an interesting day yesterday!

FIRST - someone backed into my car at the airport when I dropped the kids off. Grateful only minor damage

SECOND - Hanna being eight months pregnant - the pilot refused to take them to Auckland where they needed fetal blood transfusions this week.

Said they needed a letter from the midwife. They spoke with the midwife, but still refused to let them on the flight.

I know airlines don't like to fly ladies at this stage of their pregnancy. BUT the booking information for the JETSTAR flights clearly showed the bookings were made by the Christchurch DHB. Their destination clearly showed Ronald McDonald House. AND they had proof of appointment at the AUCKLAND HOSPITAL.

Family are so disappointed with Jetstar who let them on a flight a couple of hours later.

Talk about stress on an already stressful journey....

Update from Hanna and Scott: Mid transfusion check up today went well she looking good.. (blood transfusions have helped her a lot) 35 weeks tomorrow ekkk even came away with a 4D scan altho she didn't look impressed about it lol... also now have date for induction... 17th august so we are having her in 2 and a half weeks time !!!

On Monday Hanna and Scott return to Auckland for babies last transfusion - well not the last last because she will have a few after she is born as well...But after she arrives these can be continued in Christchurch. Her Due date was 4th September. We all pleased the CDHB have been able to keep her "contained" for as long as they have.

  • Crazy start to the last week....

      20 July 2015

Well what a week it's been! With the delay of our flight last Tuesday to missing the shuttle and having someone take one of our bags by mistake and missing our first appointment.. not being able to have the transfusion done on Wednesday also due to not being able to find a suitable vein in the umbilical cord..

we stayed up here in Auckland over the last week waiting for today! We had a scan at 3pm today and they pretty confident they have found a good place to do the transfusion tomorrow at 12.30... we can't wait!!

Although we have had free vouchers to some attractions here n Auckland over the past week we are really missing being back home in Christchurch..

We appreciate all your thought hugs n prayers as we go through the next couple of days..

    Thank you all!!

    Scott, Hanna, Harlyn and bubs

  • Failed transfusion attempt

      15 July 2015

Sadly they were not able to do the transfusion in Auckland today. A problem locating a vein in the umbilical cord. The family are being kept in Auckland until Monday where they will access the situation. Maybe try again - or maybe send family back to Christchurch for an early delivery (33 weeks).

They are going to monitor baby closely over the weekend for any possible problems arising from the failed attempt. I'm glad they were able to do a successful transfusion two weeks ago.

Once again - thanks for you love, prayers and support.
