Baby Butlers is an RH baby. Mums antibodies are attacking hers therefore fortnightly blood transfusions are needed for her to survive.
Canterbury
If I understand it correctly when mums antibodies attack babies in the blood they make bubs anemic. This means she (yes baby is a girl) needs to have blood transfusions directly into the umbilical cord.
This cannot be done in Christchurch. The hospital fly mum and dad to Auckland for this treatment and they have been fortunate enough to stay at Ronald McDonald house.
This has put a financial strain on mum and dad. They arrange a house sitter for the cat that means power and food goes on while away. And having no transport in Auckland they have to use taxi's to go to a supermarket, and purchase food. Facilities at McDonald house are great, and some firms do great meals etc - if you arrive on days and times when they are available. Otherwise you supply your own.
Dad also has to take time off work to assist mum with her daughter Harlyn. They are concerned about when leave runs out.
I'm nana. I try and support them family the best I can, but I'm not working and struggle to help them financially.
My concern is for baby and mum and if this helps to bring peace of mind to the kidlets then I'll do what I can to help.
If you have questions please don't hesitate to ask. I will update regularly and keep you in the loop as to whats going on.
Thank you for your support when it was tough. 27 September 2015
Sorry for delay - I've been down with the flu (11 nasty weeks...)
Skylah is now 5 weeks old, 6 weeks on Wednesday.
She spent the first two weeks at Christchurch Womans Hospital in neonatal for two weeks - most of that time under the blue lights.
She has had two blood transfusions since she was born. What's happening is her bone marrow is not producing enough of her own red cells. This makes it necessary for the blood transfusions.
The process means going to the hospital for a blood test. Returning to the hospital the next day for the transfusion. The process takes about 3 or more hours. Skylah is coping well with the process as is mum and dad.
Scott and Hanna would like to thank you all for your support during the tough times. Although Scott is still having to take time off work for these appointments it is a little easier than the times in Auckland. Your help was very much appreciated.
- a grateful Nana
