Last year I was diagnosed with an aggressive metastasized melanoma. I am hoping to go to Germany for further treatment.
Wellington
Current situation:
I was told on the 25th of March that the cancer I have is fast moving and that surgery, radiation and chemo will not be curative forms of treatment. For this reason I am taking a different course of action.
My story:
Sometimes making decisions in life can be tough. Being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and deciding how to move forward and what to do have been some of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make.
Quite often people say they don’t know what they would do if they were confronted with a decision like this and it’s quite true you really just don’t know until you have to.
After months of research it is with much thought and consideration that I have decided to travel to Germany for treatment. Arcadia Clinic has been highly recommended to me and they provide the treatments I am wanting. Usually they have a waiting list of up to 9 months but because of the seriousness of my situation they will take me in April.
Life has changed as I know it. I had to leave my exciting new position as HOD of Costume at Weta Workshop. I am a creative and motivated person, entering WOW for years, then moving on to my dream job at Weta. I didn’t expect things to go this way. I thought I would be back at work in no time after the surgery.
Last year I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma on my left leg, they removed a large section from the back of my leg and did a skin graft. They also removed all 11 lymph nodes from that leg. Learning to walk again after all this was probably the most painful experience of my life. I had a zimmer frame to start with then I was on crutches for quite a while. I was completely reliant on other people to help me with everything. This made quite a change for me as I am used to being so independent.
It has been a long process of recovery from the surgery and quite an adjustment getting used to life with out lymph nodes in my leg.
I will be traveling to Germany in April for a month of intensive treatment at the Arcadia Clinic. Their main treatments are full body hyperthermia, localized hyperthermia, intravenous ozone and Vitamin C, along with a number of other therapies. A treatment program is designed for each patient.
I am looking at raising $80,000 to help cover the cost of the 1 month intensive program in Germany. This would cover the treatment costs, travel, board and the cost of a care person to come with me.
Along with the hard times have come the blessings of realizing what is truly important to me. I have been so supported and cared for by so many people during this time.
Thank you all,
Claire Prebble.
