Help Get Rosie Home

I need help to get my horse Rosie home, after she was given away without my knowledge while out on lease to a trainer for racing purposes.

Nationwide

In February 2012 I leased my trotting mare Rosie to a trainer in Dunedin to try her as a racehorse. He was to return her to me when he no longer wanted her. 4 short months after getting her, he gave Rosie away without my knowledge. I regularly contacted the trainer to see how Rosie was doing, and he would tell me she was working well, or out for a spell, he would even tell me the times she had been working, so I had no reason to worry. But then the trainer disappeared, no one knew where he was or what had happened to his horses. It took me a long time to track him down, and when I did, he insisted Rosie was spelling in Dunedin. It was only in August 2014 that I found out the awful truth - that he had lied to me for the past 2 years, he had given Rosie away 2 years ago and then continued to make out he still had her! It was a devastating blow, I felt sick at the level of deception that this guy went to! I needed to find my horse. So the hunt was on to find Rosie, and I wasn't even sure if she was still alive. It was a through some wonderful people who helped me that I was able to track Rosie down to Lawrence in Central Otago. She had been given away by the trainer, then given away again to be rehomed, then sold, and then in May this year she was sold on Trade Me to a couple in Lawrence, Central Otago who neglected Rosie. She had no other horses for company, she was never wormed, and nor did she have her feet trimmed in the whole time these people had her, because she was 'just a horse'. This photo, taken late October, is what they sent me when I asked for a photo to confirm that they definitely had Rosie, thinking I would recognise her instantly. However, in the condition she was in, at less than half the weight she had been when I had leased her 2 years ago, and looking so miserable it made me cry, I barely recognised her as the fat and happy horse she had been in 2012. They told me she had been in this condition when they bought her, but the photos which were taken the week she was sold on Trade Me showed she had in fact been in good condition when they got her. They were happy for me to have Rosie back, but they said I had to buy her from them, even though I was her legal and registered owner. When I asked if I could arrange to get Rosie picked up from them so she could start receiving care as she was in such poor condition, they threatened to 'make her disappear' so no one could take her. I went to a lawyer and the police, but they were no help at all, they didn't want to know about a stolen horse even though I had tracked her down. I have had to buy my own horse back, and now I need to transport her to Rotorua where I live, which is a very expensive exercise, and on top of this I need to get Rosie back to good condition through plenty of good feed, get her wormed and her feet trimmed etc. I would love to get Rosie on the next available trip to the North Island in a couple of weeks time so I can get her home just after Christmas, it would be the best Christmas present I could ever wish for, so if you can help me make it happen, it would mean the world to me.

Rosie is home  29 January 2015

Rosie is now home where she belongs :) I would really appreciate any donations towards paying the people who looked after Rosie on her way home, and got her away from the situation she was in. They fed her, wormed her, and got her feet done, and I am so grateful to them, I really want to reimburse them. If you can help me to pay them back, that would be fantastic, every little bit helps! Thank you to those who have donated so far, the money you gave went towards Rosie's transport home, an $800 cost. The total cost of getting Rosie home has been $1200, and she has a way to go to get back to the condition she was in when she left me, mentally and physically. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

It is so sad that we entrust our animals to people we believe well treat them the way we do and then find out they have not just let the animal down but our own faith as well. I wish you all the best with getting your Rosie back home and back to sound health and hope and prey that this has been a huge learning and you keep her in your own paddocks and not lease her out again to anyone!

Thank you so much, your donation is a huge help in paying the transporters and associated costs with bringing Rosie home! :) I will not be letting Rosie go anywhere again after this, she has been through a lot in the past two years, I was absolutely devastated when I found out that the guy I leased her to no longer had her and that he had given her away such a long time ago! He sounded like such a nice person over the phone, completely believable, never making that mistake again, that's for sure! Thank you very much for your donation, it means a lot to Rosie and I :)
