8 A's, 90.75% aggregate in his final year at school and he still may not attend University. I hope we can change that.
Auckland
We are a couple originally from South Africa and NZ has be great to us. We were one of the lucky few that got a head start in life by making the move to NZ. We settled, studied and started our careers in Auckland but not everyone gets that lucky start. We always planned to help someone from a similar background to ours get a better start in life.
Prenolin Govender is someone we think is brilliant yet unfortunate at the same time. I hope we can change that....
Taken from ThePost:
DESPITE obtaining 8 As and a 90.75% aggregate in matric Prenolin Govender is afraid he might miss out on university this year.
The Montford, Chatsworth teenager graduated from Meadowlands Technical High School at the top of his class.
He wants to study accounting and become a chartered accountant, but financial |constraints might put that in jeopardy, he told POST.
“One of the main reasons I worked so hard was to get a bursary because I knew my family would not be able to |afford my fees.”
He applied to several large organisations for bursaries without any success.
While he was accepted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to study a BCom Accounting, the 18-year-old said fees would be around R40 000 a year and money would be needed for books and transport.
He had worried about finances during his matric year, he said, but did not let it get in the way of his studies.
Prenolin would be the |first in his family to attend university, if it all works out for him.
His mother Selvie, a housewife, said she was extremely proud of her son.
“We never walked behind him and forced him to do his homework. Since he was |little, he was always with his books and self-motivated.”
She said she felt bad her son might not attend university despite excelling in matric.
“We can’t afford to send him to university but I haven’t lost hope yet.
“We will try anything possible to help him get in,” she said.
If Prenolin isnt deserving of a bit of help, who is?
I am involved because I think Prenolin is someone with a similar background to ours. Education is the key to success and Prenolin has done his part but poverty is not his fault....we all can change that.
We want to make a difference to his life by helping pay for his education.
