  • Challenge completed - body broken

Well I can tick off the bucket list a marathon on hills! Wellington put on a cracker of a day yesterday for me to attempt the 43km challenge. If you had asked me before I got my injury I would have said I was attempting a 5 hour time but ultimately yesterday it was a mental challenge to run/walk through the pain and make sure I completed it..

I had a great support crew - with Andres (first 12km), my old man (30km biking next to me) and Jason Naylor (the final 10km) all helping me get the run done. My right leg gave way at the 30km mark so a lot of "perseverance" and great chat from Jase was needed to get me across the line.

I was out there for 6 hours and 43 minutes (moving time of 6hr 15min sounds better) but I got it done!!

Thank you all for the generous donations!! It is all going to a great cause.

  • The weather gods win

Well after a few months of training there is one thing you can't control and that is weather. Unfortunately the weather gods won and the organisers of the WUU2K pulled the 43km and 62km race today. Understandable given wind gusts of over 140km and just a little bit of rain!!

The organisers were able to still run the 21km event but given I have fundraised based on running 43km through the hills I decide not to run.

Plan B (otherwise knows as the COVID backup plan) has been initiated:) I will be running the full course (weather permitting) next Saturday or Sunday. As one friend put it "I want value for my donation Doogs. Suffering of some kind".

So if anyone feels like a stroll around the hills of Wellington in nicer weather, feel free to join in along the way next weekend (will post an update on exactly when I am running).

  • The countdown to race day

Just wanted to say a massive thankyou to all the people who have generously donated to this great cause! It is extremely appreciated.

On my side I should be enjoying the "taper" before the big race. However, unfortunately my leg injury I had two months ago flared up again in my last long (28km) training run last weekend:(

So after a physio and a sports massage this week I am basically trying to nurse my body to the start line so I can "survive the race".

Thanks again for all the donations!
