Helping the people of Ukraine

An update from Mark: "Yesterday I was in Tiszabecs which is the border crossing for the Ukrainian town Vylok. I helped out at the refugee centre that had been set up at a local school. I spent a good few hours down there just helping them move stuff around and helping out any people who came by. It wasn't anything too exciting, but will undoubtedly help people in the long run. Fortunately, the need for supplies has quietened down a bit but I popped down to check at the Hungarian Border today and they had a few needs. So, one last supplies hurrah on the Hungarian border, and to pick up my mother-in-law who is coming across the Hungarian border! Her visa has been approved for New Zealand and she is coming back to live with us. Will be so amazing for my wife and sons to have their Babushka at home. After that, it's time for me to come home to New Zealand, and to my family.

I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated and followed me on this journey. Being able to help the displaced of Ukraine over the past 6 weeks has been an eye-opening and life-changing experience - it has been truly humbling. Your donations and support have helped facilitate supplies going to the people who need them, and ensuring that families got far away from the war zone and into the safety of neighbouring nations. Any remaining funds will be given to charity movements on the ground, who are in the mix and helping to get things done!"

  • Sweet Treats at Medkya, Poland

Update from Mark this morning: "Today I was at the Medkya border. I’ve dropped these supplies off and so I’m gonna hang around here and hand food and stuff out and do another drive tomorrow. In terms of what I grabbed, the supplies today included about 50 packs of chocolate biscuits, 120 bottles of juice, 60 cartoons of kids juice, 120 chocolate bars, 80 kinder surprise eggs and 80 Easter kinder chocolate bunnies. When I got there, a handful of guys helped me to unload it all and we were able to start handing it out to people coming across the border."

Medyka lies to the east of Przemyśl, Poland and is on one of the direct roads coming across the border from Lviv, Ukraine, so is seeing a lot of refugees passing through it. It has been one of the main points of passage between the two nations in the past month. Approximately 4,000,000 Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes and livelihoods so far.

  • From Modlin to Stockholm

Another update from Mark: “After being in Krakow yesterday, I drove back to the border late last night. I picked up 2 old ladies from there and dropped them to a place called Modlin - and more specifically, to the Modlin airport. They told me that they were initially going to the Warsaw train station, but then they changed their mind and decided to go to Gdańsk (a 9 hour drive) to get the ferry to Stockholm. So, I said I was happy to drive them there, however the ladies sister managed to get them a last minute flight at Modlin airport just outside of Warsaw to go to Stockholm that night, so on I went to Modlin! I helped to check them in, they got their boarding passes and she spoke to her sister on the phone in Stockholm sorting some stuff out. I gave them 100Złoty so they could have some food and refreshments, as there’s no way they would have Polish money on them as they just arrived from Kharkiv. They cried and were very appreciative and after seeing them safely off I left. Staying in Warsaw the night in a Novotel, which was quite nice. Will head back tomorrow, tons of police about in Warsaw central and lots of roads closed - probably because President Biden arrived yesterday! Not everyday you get to see him drive past you (Check out the video I took!)”

Direct from Mark: I took another family to safety from the border, this time to Warsaw. 4 ladies and a dog!! It took 5 and a half hours. This is a picture of 2 of the ladies and the dog. They had just arrived after escaping Mariupol! They were super nice, spoke a little English and they told me they loved me when I dropped them off at the central train station in Warsaw. They are now heading by train to Hamburg. They were the nicest people - so incredibly humble!

I've now taken 4 families (13 people, 1 cat and 1 dog) to 3 cities; Siewece, Warsaw and Poznan. Warsaw is definitely the biggest and most complicated location to drive to, from the border. Even though Poznan was longer I liked that drive better. Anyhow, deed for the day done, staying in warsaw for the night and will start the drive back tomorrow at 5am to keep helping out!

  • Delivering Supplies

Mark messaged us this morning and let us know that: "Today I dropped 2 car loads of supply’s to Medkya border. The first was a car boot full of biscuits, bottles of orange juice, water and soft drinks. I then dropped the reminder of the car load which contained nappies at the humanitarian centre in Przemysl. Whilst at the border I asked what else they needed and was told they were low on water, toothpaste, shower gel, soap and shampoo. So, I came back with a car boot load for them."
