Liz is a solo mum with Grade 3 invasive cancer. She can't work enough to pay the bills. Help her to focus on beating cancer.
Taranaki
My step-daughter, Liz, has grade 3 invasive breast cancer. She has had her breast off and is now having chemotherapy, She has also recently been in hospital for a week with an spinal abscess.
Liz has been through a lot. She has used all her holidays over the last 6 years to either have surgery (5 operations on her jaw including a TMJ Joint replacement, a skin cancer and skin graft, lumpectomy and a mastectomy) or to support her son who is 16 and has mental health issues.
She has been coping really well so far but things are getting pretty tough. She is a single parent and works in a small firm (just 3 people). Her boss has been wonderful and is organising for her to do some work from home when she can manage and will pay her for any hours she can work.
Her daughter, Kayla, has been amazing. She has put off going to tech for 6 months so she can continue to work part time and does the majority of the cooking and housework as well as taking Liz to all her appointments. She was paying board but has told Liz she will give her all the money she earns. Sadly even with that they will still fall short every week to cover just the necessities let alone the additional expense that comes with treatment. Liz has been to WINZ but the total in hand will be $347 (including any work she does) and her rent is $350!
Liz is very independent and hates to ask for help. I want her to be able to focus on getting through the chemo and beating the cancer, not be worrying about whether the bills can be paid.
Any donations will be used to make up the shortfall between what she and Kayla earn and her bills.
She is my stepdaughter and is an amazingly brave lady.
A warm winter thanks to you all 10 April 2015
Liz is so grateful for all the donations. She has been coping with the day to day expenses (don't ask me how!) and has been able to work part-time. She decided to spend the first lot of money on 2 trailer loads of wood as she said she would never be able to save up for that and it gets pretty cold in New Plymouth. Her friends stacked it all for her.
She has just had her last bout of chemo and will start the hormone therapy soon. She goes back to the oncologist in about 3 months, so we'll be hoping for a good report.
Lots of people have donated items for sale and a friend and I are having a stall at the Thames market tomorrow.
It is quite humbling to see how people have rallied round to help in any way they can. It's such a blessing to have so many kind people as friends. Thanks to you all.
