I am fundraising to travel to India for two weeks to help ambitious Indian communities address the issue of Energy Poverty!
Wellington
G'day team, my name is Richard, and in October of 2016, I will be travelling in India to participate in the Pollinate Energy 'Young Professionals Program' or YPP.
Pollinate Energy is a Melbourne based charitable enterprise that operates and manages volunteer driven ventures in marginalised Indian communities that are afflicted by 'Energy Poverty'.
Energy Poverty refers to a lack of access to electricity and clean cooking facilities, and affects over 1/4 of India's 1 Billion-strong population. Without these amenities, India's poor face significant barriers to basic well-being and economic development, resulting in a resilient poverty cycle.
Pollinate's YPP allows volunteers such as myself to spend time with these communities for the purpose of supplying products and advice that will help alleviate the effects of Energy Poverty, and fundamentally enable these communities to develop in a wide variety of ways.
As a young person who is passionate about renewable energy and business advisory, and the role they can play in social development, I see this as an awesome opportunity to develop my professional interests while chipping in for a really awesome cause. If you want to read more (and I recommend you do, Pollinate have achieved some pretty amazing things) - read up at https://pollinateenergy.org/.
Because Pollinate is a Social Enterprise, they rely wholly on donations to function. For this reason, the YPP requires a fundraising/donation target of $3,500 AUD for participants. I am hoping that through my efforts and your generosity, I will be able to meet this target, and go get involved in the mighty sub-continent.
If you would like to know more, or are interested in helping in any way, please contact me at richardwhite20@gmail.com.
Cheers!
My day job largely consists of assisting organisations co-ordinate large engineering projects to meaningful outcomes. More recently I have also become involved in a long-time interest of mine, renewable energy and its associated socio-technical impacts.
In practical terms, I will be assisting local Indian volunteers set up and operate small social enterprises that have a focus on the alleviation of Energy Poverty in Indian slum communities. I am really fortunate to have this opportunity as it will be a rare and unique means of applying the skills I exercise every day, to a really worthy cause, with really tangible benefits.
