Cross Country Team lift the pace with World Champs into the final straight.

Margaret Island in central Budapest (Hungary) is a peaceful place for many taking a break from the busy downtown grind, but next month from April 21 to April 26, Hungarians going for a leisurely walk will likely be able to hear cheering crowds as hundreds of athletes including our very own Sacred Heart College team occupy the island during the ISF WSC Cross-Country 2016. The Sacred Heart College team has been selected, as the very best in New Zealand, to represent at the Worlds - and the boys are amped and ready to do us all proud.

With just weeks until departure the boys (and their parents) have worked hard to raise $24, 000 of the required $42,000 needed to get to Hungary, at the same time training very hard for the biggest sporting performance of their lives. But they need our help. If you can help get them over the line, please donate to their give a little page at the link below:

The boys train 6 days a week, with the Athletics season in full swing they are all having to manage blending track preparation and competition with the demands of preparing for a Northern hemisphere Cross-Country performance over 6km on undulating parkland. This has been testing for all involved. But the rewards for all of this effort will come next month as the boy’s face up against the very best schoolboy athletes on the planet.

    All donations very gratefully accepted,

    Auckland Road Race Championships

James Uhlenberg has added another title to his growing collection picking up the Auckland SS Intermediate Boys Road Race Championship this week. The rest of the Intermediate Boys team were also totally dominant, taking Gold in both the 3-man and 6-man team events. We had six finishers inside the Top-10 overall: (James Uhlenberg 1st, Jacob Holmes 4th, Liam Miller 5th, James Matthews 7th, Jono Ansley 8th , Sean Paget 10th) The team results were miles ahead of the 2nd and 3rd place-getters. Dominic Grace also ran well, finishing very close in behind the Top-6 SHC boys.

  • Budapest beckons for Sacred Heart cross country runners

      17 August 2015

Hungary is a far cry from suburban East Auckland.

But that's where a team of cross country runners from Sacred Heart College are headed.

The squad has qualified to compete at the World Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs in Budapest next April.

The selection comes after the team achieved the top result at the national secondary schools championship in Dunedin.

It is the first time a team from Sacred Heart has been selected to compete at a world event.

Despite traditionally being perceived as an individual pursuit, cross country is about running as a team, 15-year-old Liam Miller says.

"We run for each other, you're not running for yourself or your own benefit," he says.

Being part of a team motivates you to keep moving if you're falling behind, Miller says.

"That aspect helps you to do better almost."

The team is going with the attitude to win, as opposed to a sight-seeing holiday with some running on the side, Miller says.

    Ad Feedback

James Matthews, 15, says part of the challenge will be adapting to Budapest's colder climate.

"It will be pretty unfamiliar territory, we'll have to get used to the climate so that will be part of our training," Matthews says.

While nerves for the competition are yet to kick in, they're bound to feel daunted as the date draws closer, he says.

Miller and Matthews both admit they don't know anything about Budapest and will have to do their research.

With the boys only being year 11 they will aim to make the top New Zealand secondary schools team for the next two years, Matthews says.

The squad is aiming to raise $42,000 for their trip through a Givealittle page.

    Donations are welcome
