Animal PhysioNZ in Christchurch, New Zealand, is on a mission to help rehabilitate rescued galgos (Spanish Greyhounds).
Canterbury
Galgos are used to hunt hares in Spain. From two months old they are trained and selected for hunting. Often only one from a litter makes a hunting dog, the rest are frequently abandoned. Overbreeding leads to mass abandonment and over 50,000 dogs are left to their own luck on the streets. Galgos have been hanged, dropped in rubbish bins and wells or burnt.
In 2006 112 Carlota Galgos was founded to highlight the plight of these dogs and now rescues as many galgos as possible. The dogs are cared for on a one-on-one basis, socialised and given medical care in order to be adopted.
Many galgos have sustained injuries requiring rehabilitation and physiotherapy, often these are horrific. Animal PhysioNZ is raising funds to provide equipment and training to set up a rehabilitation unit. All funds raised will go directly to the purchase of the equipment. Elena Saltis, a certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist, will be self funding her trip to work with 112 Carlotta Galgos and establish the unit.
