Fire rips through the family home only leaving them with the clothing on their back

Nationwide

Saturday 1 November 2014, Loburn, Rangiora, North Canterbury. A house fire caused by a cell phone charger overheating turned the Thompson families lives upside down leaving them with absolutely nothing except the clothes they were wearing and the fathers work vehicle. The home has been completely burnt to the ground, the family vehicle unusable (but insured), was totally melted along one side as well as the electrics and their beloved pet jack russell/bichon/shitzu 1 year old dog, Louie very sadly never made it out. The Thompsons, Dad Mike, Mum Kylie, Connor 18, Georgia 16, Kennedy 13 and little Harri 7, have only just landed back on their feet after Mike suffered a broken back while out felling trees to supply the family with firewood and spent months off work as a builder recovering. With no house or contents insurance after struggling to make ends meet, the last few days have been obviously feeling very dark for them. The only luck on their side was noone home at the time when usually everyone would have been tucked up in bed if it were not for attending a local community fundraising event to support family and friends themselves on the night and the children staying at relatives and friends homes. Please help us to help them start all over again, they are also a family who pay it forward and do what they can to help others. Please view the updates and let us know if there is anyway at all you can possibly do to help, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Myself and my family are very close friends of Kylie and Mike and their family. Our children have grown up together, we adults, flatted together as teenagers and young adults. The Thompson family are an extension of our own. It devastated us to watch their family home go up in flames, losing everything that they had ever worked for and the extremely painful loss of Louie, the families little pet dog.

Is There Anything You Can You Do To Help??  20 January 2015

Hi everyone, 2 and a half months on and the family are feeling positive and are looking to move into their container home on their previous site, this coming Easter. Building is under way....Do you know of any contractors or building firms that may donate building products or their time to help Mike with the rebuild of his families new home?? If so, please leave a message here in the comments section, thank you.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
