To provide lifelong learning and enhance the musical experiences of our students and to encourage cultural ties within the pacific region.
Waikato
Hillcrest High School Orchestra are fundraising to commission a new orchestral score from award-winning composer Xu Tang. In this way cultural ties are forged across the pacific and a new, exciting musical event is created: This music will be performed at our orchestral exchange concert in July as well as our annual ITM Waikato Bands and Orchestras Festival on 23 August 1919 (in Hamilton) and our department concert later in the year. Dr Martin Griffiths, who arranges music for the group and has conducted the orchestra for the last three years says....... "Hillcrest High School is culturally and ethnically diverse and there is a real sense of energy and purpose in the young players, many of whom are going to be active in music for many years to come. To participate in the creation of a new score, meet the composer and workshop the unique sounds of Xu's music: these experiences will remain with the students forever."
Hillcrest High School is a co-educational secondary school with a roll of approximately 1800 students.
Hillcrest High School’s mission is to value all students, enhancing their self-esteem, academic potential, abilities and sense of responsibility by helping them to develop the knowledge, ideas and skills to become active, independent, caring New Zealanders.
We need a piece of music for multiple parts, as many as 13 lines of music. This is a huge task and takes the expertise and creativity of our composer Xu Tang. Any remaining funds will be used to support young composers from Hillcrest High School.
