Hip replacement for our Mom Susan in the Philippines

  • 1 Month at the Orthopedic Hospital

      6 February 2021

It’s been a month since my mother-in-law was admitted to the Philippine Orthopedic hospital and we would like to thank all of you for your love & care. This has made our difficult journey more bearable knowing that we have your support. Our mom was supposedly scheduled for operation this coming Tuesday (9 Feb) because her blood sugar has finally became stable. However, we were informed by the doctor that since her fractured femur has been left broken for a long time, it would be advisable not to use cannulated screws but to do a total hip replacement to avoid complications. We are still on the lookout for implant availability for the surgery to happen as soon as possible.

We hope you continue to include us in your prayers as we go through this difficult time.

It’s been 2 weeks since our mother has been hospitalized because of her fall. Since then the nurses and doctors were keen to keep her blood sugar low... the past few days has been good. Her blood sugar is currently ranging from 173 - 100mg/dl compared to her prevous readings which reaches up to 500mg/dl which is superhigh.

With regard to the supplies needed, only cannulated screws are available for her fractured femur. With the doctors go signals and availability, we might resort to this option due to unavailability of total hip arthroplasty (THA). While cannulated screws are way cheaper, healing, ability to walk and recovery might take a while. It is not the best but we cannot leave chances for uncertainty.

At the moment we are in need of blood donors. We would need at least 8 bags for her surgery... again our heartfelt thanks to everyone who is constantly asking and checking on her... we really appreciate it..

We were able to talk to our mom and sister yesterday and it is comforting to know that the nurses and doctors were looking after our mom very well. At this stage, they wanted to make sure her blood glucose and creatinine is at the normal levels. This will help them decide their next step to prepare her for the surgery. They’ve also discovered that her heart is a bit weak at this stage.
