Local support in Budapest for Ukrainian refugees
International
As some of you might know, I’m currently based in Budapest, Hungary. Since the start of the war a few days ago there have already been more than 85,000 refugees who have crossed the border into Hungary looking for shelter. There is a continuous stream of new refugees coming (lots of them on foot) with long waits for the border crossings between Ukraine and Hungary. The government expects that there could be up to 600,000 refugees arriving in Hungary.
There are numerous small and large organisations trying to help these refugees. Lots of people are driving to the border with supplies and return with refugees and drive them further into Hungary to other people who are offering temporary accommodation. There are regularly trains full of refugees arriving in Budapest. Locals are dropping of food, drinks and other supplies at train stations to assist these people.
Local NGO’s are holding collection events here in Budapest and then driving all the supplies to border towns which need them. One organisation delivered 9 van/truck loads of supplies over the weekend and still have a full warehouse here in Budapest. But they are currently requesting donations of fold-able camping beds and Covid tests.
I’m planning to donate supplies over the next few days to some of the local organisations and to the people arriving at the train stations here in Budapest. If anyone is willing to donate as well, you can contribute here at Give A Little.
As I'm currently living in Budapest, I can purchase supplies to support Ukrainian refugees.
Food, drinks, blankets, sanitary items etc.
Any left-over money will be donated to local charities.
More supplies delivered 11 April 2022
Here is another update from Budapest. We've been busy with sorting out more supplies for the refugees the last few weeks. These were the main things we spent money on since my last update:
1. Toiletries supplies for new arrivals. Refugees arriving at the train station often don't have much things with them, so we provided about 50 packages with basic supplies.
2. Groceries and cleaning products. We had some contacts at a supermarket and a factory and managed to get very good rates for supplies. A refugee shelter provided us with a list of products which they needed, so we ordered nearly 600kg of supplies and got that delivered to them.
3. Face painting supplies for a community center. They run daily classes for Ukrainian kids and have about 25-30 kids there every day. This was a great success and there are several volunteers who will be running this activity on a weekly basis.
4. Clothes and shoes for the refugee shelter. They had sufficient food last week, but they needed more clothes. They provided us again with a list of required items, so we spent a morning shopping at the Chinese market and filled up 5 bags.
So far we spent about half of the donations. So more work to be done here, but there are still more refugees arriving and the ones who stay here also still need more support.
