Holmies support Ukrainian refugees

  • More supplies delivered

Here is another update from Budapest. We've been busy with sorting out more supplies for the refugees the last few weeks. These were the main things we spent money on since my last update:

    1. Toiletries supplies for new arrivals. Refugees arriving at the train station often don't have much things with them, so we provided about 50 packages with basic supplies.

    2. Groceries and cleaning products. We had some contacts at a supermarket and a factory and managed to get very good rates for supplies. A refugee shelter provided us with a list of products which they needed, so we ordered nearly 600kg of supplies and got that delivered to them.

    3. Face painting supplies for a community center. They run daily classes for Ukrainian kids and have about 25-30 kids there every day. This was a great success and there are several volunteers who will be running this activity on a weekly basis.

    4. Clothes and shoes for the refugee shelter. They had sufficient food last week, but they needed more clothes. They provided us again with a list of required items, so we spent a morning shopping at the Chinese market and filled up 5 bags.

So far we spent about half of the donations. So more work to be done here, but there are still more refugees arriving and the ones who stay here also still need more support.

You all have already donated $6000. The generosity is just amazing! It just keeps coming (the donations, but also the refugees....)!

So far I've spend $400 of it on direct supplies for the arrivals at the train stations. Today I dropped of about 50 lunch packs and 12 baby/kids packages. It was mentioned that loose items were challenging to distribute when large groups or new arrivals come in, so packaging them up was preferred. So I spend a few hours this morning making sandwiches and packing it all up in bags. This wouldn't have been possible without all your donations!

We're looking to order bulk supplies over the next few days. We have good contacts with a wholesale grocer, a supplier of soaps & detergents, and we probably place a large order at Ikea for blankets, pillows, plates, cups, cutlery etc. I'll keep you posted!

Whow! You're all amazingly generous with your donations!! It is way, way, way more than I was expecting! Thanks so much

It's now already $3910, which equates to 860,000HUF! That is equal to 2 full months of an average engineer's salary here in Hungary. So we can buy heaps of supplies for this money!

This morning I went to the two main train stations to drop of some supplies for people arriving by train. The demand was mainly for water bottles, sandwiches and fruit. I bought what I could carry by myself, which was only about $120 worth of groceries.

So with the help of some friends I'm looking at buying supplies in larger quantities over the weekend. We already have someone who offered a van to transport it all, so we might even make a trip towards to border (about 3.5h drive) to drop of supplies. We just need to figure out what supplies are needed where, which is a bit of a daily changing puzzle. I'll keep you all updated with how things go!
