Help save Homer's life!
Waikato
Homer (the big yellow doofus) is a beautiful labrador puppy who was a patient at the veterinary clinic I work for. He was initially diagnosed with a vitamin deficiency that caused severe neurological signs. He would pace and circle endlessly, drool, press his head against hard surfaces and would stumble and wobble when he walked. Without treatment we expected to see Homer continue to deteriorate before passing away.
He responded amazingly to treatment for several weeks but relapsed, causing the vets to look further into his condition.
Unfortunately his owners were not in a position to continue his veterinary care and were facing having to euthanise him. I volunteered to adopt him in order to make sure he could continue to receive care because he's so young, and such a sweet boy.
When I volunteered to take him in, his treatment needs were fairly basic - vitamin supplementation (thiamine/B1) and to be transferred to a good quality, complete and balanced dog food. But the day he officially became mine, this changed.
Homer has now been diagnosed with a hepatic shunt. The good news is that there's a surgery than can completely cure him and save his life. The bad news is that the surgery is a specialty procedure that will cost around $6 - $8k. Sadly neither myself or his former owners are able to cover this financially, so I'm hoping to raise funds towards this surgery (portosystemic shunt repair) to save his life.
If you are able to share or donate please do! He's the bestest boy.
Money raised will be used to cover Homer's veterinary treatment and surgical costs, including post-op care and blood testing. Any additional funds will be donated to HUHA and CARE Animal Trust in Taupo.
Closing in on 1/3 of the way! 3 January 2024
Homer had a great New Year's and we have been blown away at the donations we've received so far.
We've been in contact with Massey and could be looking at surgery at the end of January if we can raise enough money to fund it.
Homer is feeling great on his meds and prescription diet and is full of energy - we've had zoomies throughout our house while he plays with his favourite Christmas toy - a squeaky rubber bone 🤣
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated ❤️
