Honour Liam by donating funds for a new MetaNeb respiratory machine at Starship Hospital. We want to make a difference to those that follow.
Auckland
Liam was originally diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma (a blood cancer) in 2013 at age 13. After two relapses of the cancer and his treatment involving chemotherapy, radiotherapy and two stem cell transplants - he beat the cancer!
Unfortunately, he went on to develop a degenerative lung condition that saw him transferred from the fantastic Starship Oncology team to the fantastic Starship Respiratory team. While undergoing treatment there he and the nursing/physiotherapy staff talked about a respiratory machine that would have been the ideal aid for him and for many others. Unfortunately this machine (MetaNeb) was and still is not available at Starship. The Martel family made a commitment to his treatment team that we would fix that!
We believe that donating for a specific item achieves more than a generic cause does. Hence this Givealittle page aims to raise the necessary funds for the MetaNeb machine. Should there be surplus funds, they will be donated to the Starship Foundation.
Liam passed away at Starship on Dec 29th 2016 as a result of his lung condition. It is too late for Liam to help this cause but its not too late for us to reach the goal and empower Starship with a device that will make a significant difference to patients. It would make Liam very happy to know that others following him could now have this treatment option.
Thanks for your support in achieving this worthy goal!

As Liam's father I want to see Liam's desire to see this new MetaNeb machine in use at Starship for the benefit of people following in Liam's footsteps.
The MetaNeb has landed! 2 June 2017
Today was a great day. The MetaNeb that we collectively helped purchase for Starship Childrens Hospital has been delivered and is in play!
Kelly and I attended the first training course on how to use the new MetaNeb along with the excited nurses and physios - I even got to be a trial patient for a while (see the photos).
It was very rewarding for us to see the enthusiasm that the hospital staff had towards being able to offer a ‘new to New Zealand’ treatment option. There is a definite desire and goal to share this equipment with other hospitals across New Zealand and also into the adult treatment domain as well.
The Martels and Starship collectively, would like to thank you for your donation that helped enable this all to happen. It is going to make a difference.
But wait, there is more to come…….more equipment will be delivered in the coming weeks to other parts of the hospital. So our combined impact has still more to offer – details to come.
Thanks again – you have all honoured Liam with your generosity and support.
