Hoodie Day

  • Congratulations to Garin College

      10 November 2009

For Hoodie Day 2009 NZAAHD asked schools and community groups to look a little closer and see the goodie in the hoodie. We wanted to celebrate all the positive contributions young people make in their communities every day around the country. Several schools held Hoodie Day mufti days and all over people dawned their hoodies in support of young people and raised funds for NZAAHD. In total close to $4,000 was raised to help NZAAHD support groups all around Aotearoa who work with young people. Garin College in Nelson was the winner of our competition and today we flew their representative Nic Barkley up to Wellington to attend our event with Age Concern New Zealand as part of Age Concern Awareness Week. 10% of funds raised on Hoodie Day was presented to Age Concern to show the support young people have for older people. On the day itself Age Concern members showed their support for young people by dawning their hoodies, many of you will have seen the images in your newspapers but link here to see more. Nic and his fellow students at Garin College raised close to $400 for NZAAHD and the whole school picked up on the message of Hoodie Day, with several of the teachers wearing their hoodies to school that day as well. We would like to make special mention of Marlborough Girls College for their enormous efforts in raising money for NZAAHD. A big thanks to all organisations and individuals that gave on Hoodie Day, your support for NZAAHD is very much appreciated. We look forward to Hoodie Day 2010! Nga mihi nui, naa Trina King National Executive Officer New Zealand Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Development (NZAAHD) I Taumata Manaaki Rangatahi

  • Oldies good in Hoodies too

      6 August 2009

You may notice that more older people than usual wearing are hooded sweatshirts next Wednesday, 12 August. The 'Goodie in a Hoodie' you see might also be an 'Oldie in a Hoodie' as older people show their support for young people. ""Age Concern supports New Zealand's Hoodie Day, as part of the UN International Youth Day next Wednesday, 12 August,"" Age Concern New Zealand national president Liz Baxendine says. ""Older people and young people have a lot in common. We both face stereotypes based on our age rather than our real achievements and outlook on life. ""Many older people enjoy time with grandchildren and mentoring other young people. We were all teenagers ourselves not too long ago."" ""And many of us wear hoodies ? they're practical and comfortable garments. I'm travelling next week, and I'll be certain to pack one to wear on 12 August,"" Liz Baxendine says. As part of the NZ Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Development (NZAAHD) Hoodie Day, events are being held across New Zealand with funds raised being used to support people who work with youth. Age Concern is also marking Hoodie Day, encouraging local Age Concerns to hold their own events. Ten per cent of Hoodie Day proceeds will be donated to Age Concern. ""We look forward to celebrating International Youth Day with people of all generations next Wednesday,"" Liz Baxendine says. http://www.ageconcern.org.nz/happiness/keeping-connected/oldies-good-hoodies-too

  • Hoodie Day

      16 June 2009

In 2009, Hoodie Day will be held on the United Nation's International Youth Day ? Wednesday 12 August. New Zealand Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Development (NZAAHD) is asking people to hold off their innovative Hoodie Day events for August. She says NZAAHD's executive team have given a lot of consideration to when the best time is to hold Hoodie Day. ""We have an important focus on relationships for Youth Week that we don't want to get lost in the discussion about hoodies. In 2008 the Hoodie Day discussion overwhelmed the theme."" NZAAHD was also keen to ensure Hoodie Day has its own focus, its own resources and its own attention, she said. ""We think it will be great for New Zealand to celebrate the United Nation's(UN) International Youth Day.""
