Hope for the Hopeless

  • Hope for the Hopeless

      8 July 2025

Gareth has now been in a Thai prison for 6 months, with 2 and a half years to go. He has been in the same shirt and pair of shorts for all this time as it is very difficult to send him things from outside. What has been successful is sending some reading books and a pair of glasses to help deal with the isolation and boredom. boredom. Gareth is also able to purchase simple meals as an alternative to rice and salted fish. Medical care is poor however and ha still not been assessed for his gout and heart condition..He has lost over 25 kilos since being incarcerated.

Thank you to the local friends who support and are able to visit and to all others who support from afar.

A friend was able to sell a boat that gareth had builr so som edevts have now been paid. Based on reponses to this appeal we have reduced the amount that we hope to receive in order to pay for remaining expenses which include day to day costs within the prison for toiletries and extended the closing date to April.

Gareth has now been in a thai prison for over a month. the NZ High Commission in Bangkok managed to have a video converstion with him and learnt that due to his health conditions he is in the prison infirmary. Gareth is permitted one 20 minute visit per week but this needs to be booked in advance, One of his friends will be seeing him tomorrow so I am really looking forward to an update on his wellbeing. as garth has no access to phone or internet the Give a little team has given permission for me as his sister to receive funds on his behalf and use them to provide for any needs at the prison. Thanking you all for your support. I am really missing the regular contact i had with gareth prior to Christmas Eve.

GARETH received his sentencing on Xmas Eve. He is now in a cell in a Thai prison for the next three years . He was refused an appeal for bail and prevented from taking his wheelchair or his heart gout and autoimmune medications into the prison. The only way for us to contact him is through his lawyer. Gareth is unsure he will survive the next three years and had hoped for deportation so that his health can be attended to jn NZ
