Hoping to cure Lacy of a fatal disease
Manawatu / Whanganui
In November 2024, after I noticed her tummy becoming enlarged and her eyes changing colour, my six month old kitten Lacy was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis, which until recent times was a death sentence for cats as there was no cure. However, trials of the human drug Remdesivir, which was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic for people with acute COVID-19 symptoms, showed that it helped cats with FIP.
In December I started Lacy on a 12 week course of Remdesivir, compounded for cats, and also purchased a similar product, GS-441524 from overseas.
Unfortunately, the drugs are very expensive. The first batch of Redesivir for Lacy was $262, the second batch $442 and the GS-441524 was $300. Another batch will still need to be purchased to complete the 12 week course. In addition there was a vet visit, blood test, and a $350 phone consultation between my vet and a vet in Auckland.
All up, the bill has so far amounted to around $1600, with more costs to come. The final bill is likely to be in excess of $2000, so I'm hoping to raise that amount. I feed over two dozen otherwise stray cats each day and my budget is already stretched just trying to do that much for them all, so any help with covering Lacy's costs would be much appreciated.
Vet work and medicine costs.
Lacy's Update 24 February 2025
I folks, sorry for the lack of updates here, I tend to update Lacy's condition on Facebook more than anything. She has been taking the medication for 11 weeks of the 12 week course, but her blood test a few days ago revealed she is still anemic and has low protein levels. But the results were better than the first blood test so there is some improvement. However, she will need to keep taking the medication beyond the 12 week course, essentially just keep going until she can return a blood test that is in the normal range.
Thank you to all who have donated so far. Her bills have totalled over $2000 so far, but I'm still hoping to raise as much of the original $2000 as possible.
Thank you Lynda, your help is much appreciated.
Brad, thank you so much for your donation, that was extremely generous of you! I'm staying very positive for Lacy, her improvement is very slow but an improvement nonetheless. You've really helped with keeping her medication going, thank you.
