Help me get to the Freeride World Champs!
International
Hi, I'm Hugo. I'm an 18 year old skier from Taupo, New Zealand.
This Summer I will be travelling to Europe for the Freeride Junior World Championships.
Freeride skiing is an exciting sport, which involves hiking up a mountain face and skiing back down (getting massive air and doing tricks along the way) - watch this video to learn more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nazfx9hfkYQ
The world champs are the largest competition in the Freeride Junior Tour, with the best young skiers and snowboarders from Europe, North America and Oceania invited to compete.
I have been competing in the Freeride Junior Tour for 3 years. For a full list of my results, check out my FJT profile here: http://www.freerideworldtour.com/rider/hugo-cameron
This year in the NZ JFT champs I placed 2nd overall, in the 18 and under mens ski category. I also had two podium finishes at competitions in Europe, a 2nd place in the Verbier Freeride Week competition, and a 3rd in the Open Faces Montafon Junior competition. I am currently ranked 2nd in the Europe-Oceania tour. Following these results I was named Sport Waikato Taupo Junior Sportsman of the Year, and received the Team Taupo Junior Sports Scholarship Supreme Award (Male). I was also named for the Snow Sports NZ Freeride Team.
I am very grateful to have received a wildcard entry to the world championships following these results. It will be my second time competing at worlds, and I hope to improve on my performance in 2016, with the intention of taking out a podium spot for New Zealand!
Through this competition I have travelled to my dream skiing destinations before even leaving high school, which I am enormously thankful for. The mountains are where I consider to be home, and I am passionate about the outdoors. I appreciate the world, and the incredible opportunities I get to explore and experience the most beautiful places on Earth.
I will be in Europe from January until April, training hard and competing all around Europe in the lead-up to the world championships.
I am very grateful to my family, my coaches, and my homies, who have sacrificed so much to help me compete. So far I have funded my travels through the generous support of my family and sponsors, scholarships and grants (massive thanks to Team Taupo and the Taupo Sports Advisory Council, and Snow Sports NZ, for their support), and through my holidays jobs and savings.
If you would like to be part of my freestyle journey, I would really appreciate the support! You can help out in lots of different ways:
1. You can donate through this givealittle page. Money will go towards the costs of training, coaching, and competing overseas in Europe. Even a dollar or two would really help me- it could be the cost of a pie to fuel my body or a train ticket to get to the next competition.
2. Follow me on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/hugocmrn/) to keep up to date with my progress in competitions and my adventures training throughout Europe. You can also check out my website here: https://www.hugocameron.com/
3. Share my story with your friends and family!
4. I'm currently looking for sponsors to partner with, as my career as a freeride skier develops - if you know a brand (or are a brand) that may be interested, I can be contacted at: hugocmrn@gmail.com
Funds will go towards the costs of living and travelling in Europe while training and competing in the Freeride Junior Tour, in the lead up to the World Championships.
