Hutt Hospital ICU - in memory of Remy Townsley

  • Photos of the furniture - final update

We have received some photos from the ICU of Remy’s furniture bought with your kind giving.

The black chair is for the ICU room itself and can recline to a flat position. It is for sitting or sleeping in beside the ICU bed or for being able to hold a small child who is in ICU but requires holding. Children sometimes need to spend a night in ICU post operation so this will be a comfort to parents.

The green chair is in the waiting room and is for family who unexpectedly need to stay near their loved ones but can’t stay in the room.

Previously chairs had to be borrowed from other parts of the hospital and only if they were available. Each night I stayed at the hospital with Remy, the ICU was rung asking for the chair back that I was sleeping in. But thankfully due to your kind and generous donations in our son’s memory, the ICU has these two chairs now to support families.

    Thank you all so much.

  • Agreed on new furniture

      10 January 2021

Just wanted to update everyone that Susan and I met before Christmas and we have agreed to purchase two new pieces of furniture for ICU. The first is a pull out bed for the family room. This is in place in the room now. The second piece is a recliner chair for ICU that allows a parent to stay with a child in ICU. This will be especially useful for parents who have babies recovering from surgeries like cleft palates. This chair should be delivered by February. With the left over money we will be creating some packs that ICU staff can give to people who arrive unexpectedly in ICU with their family member with nothing. For example soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, sanitary pads etc. We will have a small dedication in the future. Thank you again everyone for your donations. It has been nice for us to work on a positive project with ongoing benefits whilst we have been all so very sad.

  • Meeting with Susan

      24 September 2020

I had a good meeting with Susan recently where we discussed spending Remy’s give a little. The first priority was getting a fold out bed for the family room in ICU and adding a lock to the door so you felt safer if you were staying overnight. Susan also thought we may be able to also get a recliner chair for by the bedside would which be especially useful when they had babies in the ICU ward. Us an is just getting reps to bring in different examples so they can find the furniture that fits the room, can be easily clean and will be long lasting. It will be lovely to see all of your amazing contributions really make a difference for families in crisis. Thank you so much!

A big thank you from the Townsley family for your kind words and donations in the memory of our our son Remy. We are initiating a meeting with ICU staff soon so we can agree on how the donations will be spent. The page finishes next week but we will update the outcome from the meeting with you all.

We as a family have been so lucky to have been wrapped in love by our family and friends throughout this terrible time. It has certainly helped us a lot on the tough days. We thank everyone who has sent us their sympathies, dropped off baking, cooked us dinner and let us cry on their shoulders.

A special thank you to Naenae Intermediate for allowing us to hold Remy’s service there and for supporting us and holding our hands through that week. Also to Robin Thomson and Belmont Primary School who helped and supported us as well.

For those of you hadn’t heard, Remy donated his organs and saved 3 people’s lives. A very fitting tribute for a boy who would always give away his last $5 to a friend or an hour of his time to help anyone if they needed help.
