Shirley Gardiner. Our Shirl - the heart of our community - has had her world turned upside down.
Hokitika, West Coast
On 14 July, she woke feeling unwell. A GP visit led to urgent tests and devastating news: tumours in her lungs and brain. Weeks to live, no treatment offered. Life for Shirley and her soulmate Richard stopped in its tracks. Breaking the news to their three children was the hardest thing they’ve ever faced.
But then came a glimmer of hope. Further tests revealed Shirley may be eligible for Osimertinib. Sadly, the timeframe to access this drug through the public system was far too long. With no time to wait, Shirley and Richard had only one option — to begin private treatment and shoulder the cost themselves. It’s a chance for precious quality time… maybe even one more summer in the sun.
The cost? $10,000 per treatment, plus $500 a month for specialist care. With Shirley unable to work and Richard at her side, their income has stopped. Retirement and adventures they planned together are on hold.
If you know Shirl, you know how much she’s given: volunteering, mentoring, bookkeeping, supporting others through hard times. Now, it’s her turn.
She would never ask for help herself, but we can. Could you make a donation towards her treatment? No gift is too small, every dollar helps.
Our first goal is to fund her initial round. Anything extra will go towards further treatment, or helping Shirley and her family make the most of every moment together.
Let’s wrap Shirley, Richard, and their family in love, and make this chapter full of grace and joy.
Shirl, it’s your time now. We’re with you 💜
This page has been set up by myself, Cherryl Hamilton and Rebecca Pearson. All close friends of Shirley.
Funds will be used to fund treatment ( Osimertinib) medical costs and anything else that will make life easier for Shirley and her family.
Health Update 🌿 15 October 2025
Just a quick note to share that my treatment has been paused due to damage to my liver and kidneys. The good news is that recent scans show the tumors have reduced — a positive step forward.
Treatment options are few going forward but I will let you know once I do. I have now been transferred to the public system after 10 weeks in private oncology. The funds raised covered this and reduced the financial burden for which we will be forever grateful.
I’m now in a reset phase, focusing on rest and recovery. Still conserving energy, so keeping things quiet for the time being.
Thank you all for your aroha, manaaki, and continued support — it truly means a lot.
