A community effort to support Juanita and her whānau in their courageous fight against cancer.
Whangarei, Northland
Juanita is a beautiful whānau member, colleague and treasured friend who lights up the world. Many know her affectionately as the lead singer of Kurfew, bringing joy and hope to countless people through music. Giving this up to focus on her health has been devastating.
In 2020 Juanita was diagnosed with rare GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours). She underwent major surgery and 3 years of chemotherapy. After 3 years, she was stable and stopped treatment, but 2 months later the cancer returned. She had another surgery and began lifelong chemo.
In October '25 scans showed the cancer had spread to her diaphragm and two small intestinal tumours. Further surgery followed, without clear margins and then, discovering the cancer was resistant to treatment.
This February she was told the chemo had stopped working and the cancer has mutated and continued to grow. She has begun a more aggressive regimen, though doctors are uncertain it will work. This is the last NZ funded option. The next treatments cost $5,000 and $15,000 per month, and she has no insurance due to her battle with ovarian cancer at just 17.
Juanita is determined to fight with everything she has. With whānau spread across the country, funds will help with treatment costs and travel so they can be together for support, appointments and precious quality time. After giving so much to her community, it’s time for us to surround her and her whānau with love and practical support.
Juanita is my beautiful friend of many years and a deep inspiration to me.
Travel costs to allow whānau to spend quality time together, support, medical expenses for unfunded treatment options, and awhi to extend hope and love. Once the medical costs have been confirmed, a Page Update will be posted.
