I have been given an opportunity to work as a volunteer on a nursing placement in Arusha, Tanzania. This will be a huge life experience.
Bay of Plenty
I am a second-year nursing student who is going to Arusha, Tanzania in November 2017 for a volunteer nursing placement. I will be working for two weeks in a hospital and one week in a village community providing care to people in this developing country. I am hoping to gain life experience for my future career in nursing and want to gain greater respect and knowledge about healthcare around the world and in more impoverished countries.
The hospitals I will be working in are under-resourced, and the health conditions are usually in late stages where critical care is needed.
The knowledge I bring back will benefit my practice as a nursing student and as a registered nurse as I will gain skills not necessarily taught in New Zealand Nursing degrees.
As part of the village community placement, I will be working with a witch doctor for some time, therefore, gaining an understanding of natural medications and spiritual healing. This knowledge will be useful as I will gain a greater insight into alternative health care options.
The clinical hours I participate in will also give me a greater chance at finding a job after my degree which is an ongoing struggle for new graduate registered nurses.
I am hoping that this experience will help not only myself but the people I care for in Arusha and the wider community in New Zealand.
During this volunteer placement, I will be working in a hospital for two weeks where I will be working with patients with different kinds of health issues and providing care for them.
On the weekends I will also be working with orphanages and other community organisations.
Funds raised will be used towards flights and accommodation for the nursing placement. This is a non-profit page and all funds will be going towards expenses of the trip.
