Janelle Penjueli 7th April 1973 - 17 May 2018

  • Goodbye for now x

      23 May 2018

Today we as a community said our final goodbyes to the most selfless, courageous and brave woman

I have ever met. And I know that in these thoughts, I am not alone. During this journey, I have been

told personal stories by so many, about how Janelle touched them with her love, support and acts of

random kindness. I’ve also heard stories about a fierce woman who was ready to stand and fight,

for friends, for family, for those that couldn’t and for strangers. This is how Janelle conducted

herself right up until her final day.

This givealittle page is testimony to how so many felt about Janelle. The selfless Janelle wasn’t sure

about the page at first, but when she accepted that people wanted to support her and that it would

help her and her girls, the courageous and brave Janelle agreed.

But who knew that Janelle had touched so many. I would call and text Janelle as donations came in,

sometimes she would not believe me, sometimes she would cry, but always she was completely

humbled by the outpouring of love, support and donations. And the generosity didn’t stop there, so

many people have given gifts, their services, time and helped her and her family in too many ways to

    mention.

Janelle was also one of the most private people I know, yet she shared, openly, this last chapter of

her life with us. But she didn’t share for herself. She shared for her children and for all of us. Janelle

wanted to protect us. She wanted us to know that she was just any regular person that cancer

happened to. Janelle wanted to do what she could to raise awareness and prevent others from her

struggle. Janelle wanted us to know our bodies and to listen to our bodies, over listening to doctors.

A lesson that came too late for Janelle.

But even when that lesson came, Janelle never once complained. She never once blamed. Janelle

accepted that this is the way it was meant to be for her and she made the most of the time she had.

And she suffered everyday, to just have a little more time.

Janelle used her life to quietly, discretely, anonymously to help people. Unwittingly she had woven a

network of love and support. This wrapped itself around Janelle and her family and gave her the

courage and strength to keep up the fight as best she could, because she knew, we were all behind

    her.

In her final days, this same thing gave her the peace to let go. Janelle was at peace in the fact that,

she knew that we would all continue to love and look after her family the way she so desperately

    wanted to.

I know that Janelle is eternally grateful to all of you. For all of the things you did for her and her

family, especially her girls. I also know that she still doesn’t think she was deserving, but we all know

    otherwise.

    Be strong

    But not rude.

    Be kind

    but not weak.

    Be humble

    but not timid

    Be proud

    But not arrogant.

For me, this is Janelle’s legacy, I am sure she left her own one with you all. On behalf of her family, I

would like to thank you for your love and support throughout this journey and into the future.

Kia kaha to all that loved Janelle. Xx

  • Janelle is at peace.

      18 May 2018

Janelle is finally at peace, 11 months after cancer became a part of her journey. A part of her family and communities journey.

Janelle’s will to live, her determination to spend more time with her children, her faith and the outpouring of love and support from those known to her and those that just knew of her. All of this meant that she deified all odds and got the time she so wanted.

Janelle will be at home until her service, details will follow, but in the meantime, her family welcome you to come and visit her, but please respect that they need their time with her too. So we ask that if you would like to come and pay your respects, please come during one of the following times:

    Sunday 3-7pm

    Monday 10am-1pm & 6-9pm

    Tuesday 10am-2pm

Janelle’s family expect that groups of people may arrive at the same time and they ask that you be patient and that the will do their best to ensure everyone gets their time with Janelle.

    Janelle's family home:

    32E Garbolino Road

    Mangawhai

There have been many people already that have made kind offers of support and donations, thank you. For those of you that want to get something to the family or make an offer of support, but cant make one of the times, please make contact with Natasha Lee 021461446 or donate to Janelle’s givealittle page.

Janelle has been nothing but inspiring. She was so brave. So selfless, living with pain everyday and sickness, countless operations and treatments so that she could make those milestones with her girls and family.

Janelle knew it was ok for her to go because she knew that she was leaving her girls with such a loving family that would be supported by a community that would continue to care for and love them like she so desperately wanted to keep doing.

Her family are grateful beyond words for all the thoughts, prayers, support and love that has been extended to them throughout this time and for the days, weeks and months going forward.

If you have any photos of Janelle that you think the family may like or to be used in her slideshow, please email these to natasha@miniwhais.co.nz

  • An Update from George

      4 May 2018

Janelle has been home for the past few weeks but unfortunately her condition deteriorated, mainly with chronic pain in her lower back & hip area & an increase in general discomfort. So last Thursday Janelle had to go back to hospice for around the clock monitoring & pain control.

She was admitted to Whangarei hospital on Thursday evening for further investigation and CT scan results, although inconclusive, it suggests that the infection the may be back and causing the pain episodes and her deteriorating condition.

There was no conclusive evidence to suggest any significant disease progression but the infection keeps setting her back & with the heavy meds regime she’s on it’s also affected her appetite as well as she barely eats and is losing a lot of weight.

Her pain & nausea seem to be under control at the present time, and she’s showing small signs of improvement but is currently quite weak and needs rest & recovery before we can determine anything further.

Right now she’s not in any condition for visitors as she needs rest, but the family would like to thank everyone in the community for their continued thoughts & prayers & support. We’re extremely grateful.

  • Its been a long road...

      28 February 2018

It has been a while since I posted an update and I know that you all have been wondering about Janelle. Since Christmas, it has been a long road for Janelle.

She has been in a lot of pain and on a lot of medications for it and I havent been able, until now, to get her to tell me what I could post.

Christmas eve saw Janelle rushed back to hospital for immense pain. She was given medication for the pain, that she had an allergic reaction to, which very hearly had the worst possible effect.

Janelle has effectively in hospital since Xmas eve & has had major surgery on her back as well as a number of procedures on her kidneys. One of the operations, 17 surgeons said they wouldnt do it...the last one was willing to take the risk. All Janelle needed was one to take a chance on her, and he did, and she defied the odds, again!

She's been fighting pain & nausea since then and while she has good & bad days her bad days confine her to bed.

Janelle got her pain under control and MADE IT HOME! However it was short lived and she was home for less than a week before pain returned in her kidney area that required her re-admission to north shore hospital.

She's been battling bravely and each victory is unfortunately followed by a few setbacks.

The lastest victory is that she is home again. The new battle is for her to gain back her strength as her appetite has suffered too in this battle, and shes lost a lot of weight and general strength. But she's positive and is happy to be home.

The plan is for her to rest and try to get her strength back and beat the infection that is still ingering. I know that many of you will want to visit, but we ask that please, before you pop over, could you please phone and make sure Janelle is up to it.

While she would love to see everyone, we need to keep her well and rested.

She has ongoing hospital appointments pending but oncology has been put off until she's in a well enough state to have that conversation again.

She also intends to get back on vit c and other alternate treatments soonest.

Its one thing after another for Janelle. But she is here and fighting hard. She is strong spiritually too and sends her love to everyone and her gratitude for all the love, prayers, words of encouragement, and especially the sacrifices that many have made to show their support to her and the family.

  • Gaining Strength and Freedom!

      29 November 2017

Janelle is moving! And in the right direction!!! Janelle is going from strength to strength and she couldn't have done it without everyone's kindness, generosity, strength, support, prayers and wishes.

Janelle has been having Vit C 2-3 times a week and is maintaining her body weight and has been well enough to have visits from friends and family which in her words is "EPIC"!!!.

She is feeling connected again. She is feeling like apart of the world, involved, not just just an observer.

This week she has been transitioning from "hardcore" pain medication to some more mainstream, meaning they are managing her pain.

The nausea has pretty much gone which makes everyday so much more bearable.

Janelle has found enough strength to walk! Her husband, George, told me that Janelle wanted some fresh air, so wanted to step out into the carpark. George thought that Janelle had been gone a while so went to get her. She was nowhere to be seen. You can imagine Georges panic. Then he spotted her.....down the ROAD!!!! Walking unaided!

Apparently she has go t the the carpark and thought she could make it to the bus stop at the road edge. She got there and thought she could walk a bit further...to the end of the road!!!

Now Georges job is to stop Janelle, reminding her that she needs to be paitent and build up her strength and fitmess. Janelle now agrees, although she still finds it hard, as she has done a bit much a couple of days and has paid the price for it.

But she is walking, daily. FREEDOM!!!!!

The plan at this stage is one more week in Auckland and then....fingers crossed, home!

Finally, heading in the right direction. Now we have to slow her down!

The doctors said two months at best. They dont know Janelle!

Thank you for all your kind donations, Janelle has been using some for her Vit C treatment and all her other medical needs, like buying a wheelchair, ambulance rides, supplements, chiropractor and general health and wellness expenses. Her care would be so very different without the donations, thank you x

  • First Outing

      14 November 2017

Janelle was determined to get to the Kaipara Kapahaka Festival held at Mangawhai Beach School last Saturday to watch her three girls perform. And through sheer strength, determination, courage and a little convincing of the Hospice staff - SHE DID IT!

Janelle was able to watch her three girls perform, which was made extra special as Georgia holds the lead wahine role and it was her last performance for the Mangawhai Beach School's Kapahaka Group as she heads off to college next year.

Janelle was well enough to attend this as she is feeling better. She had Vit C treatments everday last week and has had then every day this week. She is able to have these treatments thanks to the kindness and generousity of so many.

Unfortunately there wont be any Vit C tomorrow as her haemoglobin is low and she needs to have a blood transfusion but she plans to have more later in the week.

Team Janelle has had a win. She got out. She accomplished a goal, she saw her girls perform. And I'm sure that everyone agrees, she is looking so good. Better than she has in months.

And Im sure that getting out and being invloved in "life" also contributes to her overall wellness.

So the next goals are to get her pain managed, get out of Hospice and come home and to then attend Georgia's Graduation from Mangawhai Beach School.

Thank you too everyone for the part that you have played in making all of this possible.

  • Hip Hip Hooray!!! Its been a GOOD week!!!

      9 November 2017

Janelle has been in Auckland at Hospice so that they lovely staff can help manage her pain. They have got the nausea and general pain and discomfort mostly undercontrol but she is having "break through"pain episodes when the pain just comes out of the blue, is extremeley intensence and leaves her in absolute agony.

But she is looking better and feeling better and is able to get up and about a little.

This week she has been getting her Vit C treatments!!!! YAY!!! So she is hoping that her energy levels will continue to increase and she will get more mobile.

Her wish of getting home to Mangawhai is getting closer to being a reality.

Janelle and her family are all in high spirits and the plan is to keep the Vit C treatments up, get her pain managed and her with some more energy and then bring her home.

Thank you for all of your support xx

  • Since Surgery......

      2 November 2017

Janelle under went surgery that saw them remove a 18cm mass from her pelvi cavity. This mass was pushing on her spine, causing her nausea and pain.

During the operation it was discovered that there were tiny cancer nodules throughout her pelvis and some sprerading to her spine. And that the infection in her back, was returning.

The operation went really well and Janelle felt almost instant relief from the excurating pain she had been experiencing that was making her bed ridden. After only a few days, janelle was up and about tidying her room, slowly of course, but she was up.

Janelle has been in North Shore Hospital where the staff have been really great to her. They are managing her pain and giving her IV antibotics for the infection. The antibotic are really working and are kicking the infections butt!

Janelle is getting grumpy at being in hospital and wants out. We think this is a great sign!!!! So the plan is that she will be released this week and next week she will under go some intensive sessions of Vit C and then HOPEFULLY, all going well, she may come home!!!

The girls are doing well. They have been back at school for a few weeks now. It was Becky's birthday yesterday, so we all tried to make it a really special one for her.

Janelle is feeling better and her and her family are so humbled by the love and support they have been recieving and they want me to again say, thank you.

  • North Shore Surgeon willing to operate! TODAY!

      19 October 2017

Monday saw Janelle transfer to North Shore Hospital. The first step was to manage her pain, which they are now managing really well.

As you all know, Janelle was told that the tumour in her pelvic cavity was "inoperable". Well a North Shore Surgeon has seen the pain she has been in and if surgery could possibly be an option, he is willing to give it a go!!!!! So he sent her for a CT scan.

The CT scan wasnt conclusive on what the pain was from, but they thought it could be the infection back or the tumour pressing on her spine.

So they ordered a MRI, so that they could tell more and make a definitive plan. That plan was for surgery this morning to remove the growth and her remaining ovary. FINALLY SOMETHING IS HAPPENING FOR JANELLE!!!!

They will be taking samples to rule out the infection and hope that removal of the growth will give her some comfort.

Unfortunatley, the cancer has spread though. It has gone to her remaining ovary, hence them removing it and theyhave said there is cancer building up in her spine.

As she was going into surgery this morning she sent me a text:

"On way to surgery now guys. Big as prayers please xx"

We are all with you Janelle. Every step. xx

  • This Past Week

      16 October 2017

Janelle has been in Waitakere Hospital this past week while the team there try to manager her pain and determine its cause.

Janelle managed a couple of "better" days which was a deserved break from overwhleming levels of nausea and pain that she has been experiencing. Janelle, her husband and girls really deserve those moments.

Unfortunatley, lastnight her pain has again taken a turn for the worst and today she is being transfered to NOrth Shore Hospital where she will be undergoing an MRI. George is pushing for it to be done tonight...why wait?

The MRI will hopefully be able to determine the source of the pain as its could be that the infection in her back is back or it could be the tumour. Either way, knowledge is power and a plan can be made.

The Mangawhai Focus have done an article about Janelle conveying Janelles message that we all need to be our own advocate and listen to our bodies as we know our body best. This type of journey is preventable and one to be avoided.

  • Octobers Been Tough

      12 October 2017
    Main image

October hasnt been kind to Janelle. She has had more bad days than good, which has meant that she hasnt been able to make very many Vit C infusions.

But people have been kind. Janelle is extremely grateful and humbled by the kindness she has seen in "people I dont even know". And of those that do know her, she is grateful & often overwhelmed at how you have taken time out of your life for hers.

People are doing what they can for Janelle and she would like to acknowledge a wonderful group of Mangawhai Mum's who organised the Movie night at MBS, raising over $5300, all those that helped, made AMAZING cakes, bought cakes, just everyone involved.

To Cheryl Anderson and her team of helpers and volunteers who orgainsed the Shave for Janelle and raised over $2200. Ive seen some bald heads around town and everytime I see you, I want to run and hug you and say thank you...but that could be weird, so, thank you. I showed pictures and videos to Janelle and she cried. Completely overwhelmed that you would do this. Being a hairdresser, Janelle knows how important hair is to people. Thank you.

And to all the others who have done things individually, no matter how small, these little acts of kindness and expressions of love and support bring light into the, at times, very dark days.

It was very heart warming to see the the love and supp[ort for Janelle spreading to her children. Over the past week or so, the girls have been felt the love and support too with Mangawhai Netball Club sending them a certificate for free membership for ever. This meant so much as the girls LOVE netball. One of the comments was "Wow that is good cause I dont think Mum could pay for it".

Another local family (Parkes) were holidaying with their daughter, who lives in Australia and shared Janelles Journey with her. She designs bags and made each of the girls one, the local family filled the bags with goodies, which have been very well used over the holidays.

There have been other things, books of kind words, letters, paintings, vouchers, it goes on. Thank you to you all.

Ive been putting off writing this uodate as I have been waiting for some great news to share and that news is the way our community and wider, friends, family and starngers, have all rallied around Janelle and her family.

But for Janelle, the news hasnt been great. The nausea has been debilitaing and on top she has recently been in a lot of pain. On Monday the pain got too much and she was admitted to Waitakere Hospital where they have been trying to manage her pain. Once the pain is managed, they will decide on what next.

Her family and girls are at her bedside praying for and with her and Janelle is fighting. They know that this is going to be a long uphill road that they are taking one day at a time.

"All I can say is that shes fighting hard and daily."

Janelle and her family are completely overwhelemed with the efforts from you community and the wider community have put into fundraising for her.

I spoke to Janelles Mum today who said she knew that Mangawhai was a great community but she had no idea just how great. She said that she is so humbled and blown away at all the love and support that is being shown for her daughter. She wanted me to pass on her sincerest and deepest thanks to everyone, organisers and participants.

There have been some awesome individual acts of kindness, donations and presents been given to / for Janelle. She received one of these yesterday and it was truly amazing to see the warmth that it bought her to know people are taking their own time and initiatives to show her aroha.

And an update about Janelle, I saw Janelle yesterday and yesterday was a good day. She was looking well, better than I had seen her recently and she was more comfortable. Janelle has stopped her antibiotics and the nausea has subsided.

  • Very Tough Week

      20 September 2017

Its been an incredibly tough week. Janelle has been really unwell. Sha had to postpone her Vit C treatment for a few days while she rested.

A few days later, Janelle pushed through and went to her Vit C appointment but was so sick that she vomited in the carpark. The staff at the clinic were amazing and Janelle was so thankful for their kindness. The infusion went ahead and and her body tolerated it quite well.

Janelle was feeling bad for a few days and then Friday she started to feel a bit better. But it didnt last, Janelle was taken to North Shore Hospital in an ambulance. The staff did what they could to make her comfortable while they did a few tests, of which the results were positive. Her blood count was good and her inflammatory markers had dropped - finally a positive sign.

Janelle went home and woke up on Monday feeling good. So she went and had another Vit C infusion, which went well but the next day, a bad day.

Janelle went to the hospital again because of her nausea and has just come home. The nausea is relentless and they are trying to find out what is causing it but she is too sick to undergo the tests. Janelle needs a few good days in a row. Please pray for that to happen.

Janelle and her family are very thankful for everyones support and as soon as she is able, she will send another video message to you all.

Today is a good day for Janelle. Yesterday was a bad day. Janelle was struck down by debilitating nausea which was an allergic reaction to some medication. No more of that med!

But today is a good day. Janelle is on her way to Auckland where she will stay with family for the next week.

So far she is booked in for a second opinion and a PET scan, which will determine if the cancer is anywhere else.

Janelle is also going to be doing Vitamin C and Oxygen Therapy courses, both starting in the next few days.

Janelle wants me to make sure that everyone knows just how grateful she is to all those that have shown her support through this page, visits, baking, fundraisers, prayers....so many different ways.

Janelle would like to thank you all personally, so she has made a video which I will upload soon. She has also asked that I keep you all updated, so please, come back to this page every few days as I will be posting updates on behalf of Janelle and her whanau.

  • First Pain Free Day

      10 September 2017

I spoke with Janelle today. She had life in her voice. She sounded happy. She told me that she was having her first pain and nausea free day in months.

Janelle wants you all to know that she is beyond thankful for the love and generous support that she has received. She is so humbled that there are so many of you that have been able to donate and sent her messages.

"Filled to the brim" is how she described herself. Filled to the brim with with love, laughter and prayer.

Janelle is in Hospice in Whangarei where they are taking expert care of her and are managing her pain. She will be transferring to Auckland in the next few days, where she will be seeing some specialists and receiving her first intravenous Vitamin C therapy session.

It is expected that once this is done and as long as her pain is managed, that she will then return home.

Your donations have meant the world to Janelle and her family and have helped ease one of the many stresses this family has to face.

The donations have already made a difference and are opening up opportunities that otherwise may not have been possible.

    Thank you so very much.
