Jordan needs your help, where physical health meets mental health, in a garden

$5 of $25,000 goal
Given by 1 generous donor in around 6 months

A specially-designed sensory garden uses evidence-based design. It can be more powerful than medicine, especially for developmental delay.

Northland

Jordan-Lee was born into a happy family 13 years ago. However things went downhill when he suffered brain damage after a fit as a baby. He lost his sight and developmentally, went backwards. Cortical blindness means he can only see red and gold. Years of paralysis mean his muscle tone is weak. However, the good news is that Jordan is showing signs of improvement. Three years ago he learnt to walk unaided. A set-back put him back in the wheelchair but physically he is now ready to get out and try again. Mentally, it's much harder. He has lost a lot of confidence.

That's where a specially designed low maintenance sensory garden can help. 'Sensory gardens' tick all the scientific boxes, are proven to restore and improve cognitive function, can boost motivation to do simple things. A garden at home could help Jordan-Lee learn to walk again.

Jordan's dad was forced to leave work due to ill health. His Mum is a full-time carer. His twin brother is still in school. Like many families in New Zealand, this family has a tough time managing. They need your help. We can provide the design, and generous friends have offered to help with labour, but the materials, the plants, the specially coloured red and gold fencing, pergolas, sand, water and interactive features come at a cost.

The family's garden is currently sloping so wheelchair accessible terraces and paths with handrails need to be dug and laid, to enable Jordan to get into the new garden. We may need to hire a digger and driver if we don't find one in the community.

Use of funds

The funds will be used to create a sustainable, supportive environment for Jordan-Lee and his family. It will be flexible, to accommodate changing needs over time. Any surplus will go to his school.
