Justice for those in mental health. My son died in a suspected suicide in the ward 21 in 2021 and he should have been safe.
Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui
My son Braden (last name withheld for family reasons) died in a suspected suicide in Ward 21 Palmerston North Mental Health Unit October 2021.
Braden's hospital death report took over a year with his family commitment to the overall process for answers so his death will not happen again and effect another whānau family.
The hospital report was late taking a year and we are waiting for his coroner's inquest still 2 years on. As a Dad and Whānau family we need closure and family to be able to attend plus cost of printing all the Hospital/ Police/ Coroner's reports, Dr's and Nurses witness reports plus travel and accommodation.
We need help getting justice for my son and others who have died in and around Mental Health Wards that arn't working for them.
The end result we are wanting is that Braden's death in the Palmerston North Mental Health Ward 21 will not go in vein and his (and others) reports and recommendations will be implemented.
I am his father. His passing was a major shock, even worse it happened inside the Palmerston North Mental Health Ward 21 where he should have been safe.
Funds will be primarily used for stationary and printing of court/hospital/police reports and documents, reports before and during Braden's inquest. Funds will also be used for travel and accommodation costs for whanau family attending Braden's inquest.
Long Time Update 25 May 2025
Kia Ora all,
As you can imagine this email message has been a very long time coming, such is the slow march of Coroner's Inquests. Now finally we have some movement with the Coroner's Office now looking at, and asking MidCentral Health for further information on Braden's death.
The Coroner has also asked to tour both the old Ward 21 and the new Mental Health Ward still being built.
With the above information in mind I still don't foresee a physical inquest until at least after August of this year - the latest proposed opening of the New Ward (it won't happen they are still way behind schedule).
So some movement on Braden's Inquest Inquiry.
More updates as I have them myself.
Hug deeply and let each other know you love them,
Nga Mihi,
Karl Pearce (Braden's dad)
