Wellington

Please Help Support the Family of Luke Smith

We are devastated to announce the tragic loss of Luke Smith, a vibrant young man whose life was brutally and senselessly cut short in the attack on Courtenay Place October 6th 2024. This sudden act of violence, resulting in his death has shattered his family, leaving them in unimaginable grief, heartache, and now facing unexpected financial challenges as they try to navigate this terrible reality.

Luke’s family is now left to bear the weight of not only their immense sorrow at the loss of their only son, but also the overwhelming costs associated with repatriation back to South Africa, funeral arrangements, possible legal proceedings, mental health support, & travel expenses incurred by the senseless killing of their child. No family should have to endure this pain, nor face it alone in a foreign country.

Luke was full of life, hope, and promise—a bright light taken far too soon, a young man who loved to dance. His assault & resultant death on Monday night, in the heart of Wellington’s entertainment district, is an unthinkable tragedy.

Your donation, no matter the size, will directly go to Luke’s family as they cope with the emotional and financial strain of this heartbreaking loss. Thank you for standing with us during this incredibly difficult time. Your generosity means the world to his family, and the wider African community of Wellington, and will help ensure that Luke’s memory is honored with love and dignity.

Thank you for your generosity   2 November 2024

On behalf of the Smith family, we extend our heartfelt thanks to each of you who has donated to the #JusticeforLuke Givealittle campaign. Your support means the world to them during this deeply difficult time. With your generosity, the campaign will continue until 30th November, and we’re hopeful that together, we can reach our goal.

Brian Smith shared with us that he does not want his son’s tragic death to be in vain. He is determined to bring about lasting change and ensure that no family endures this pain again. The "Protect The Youth" petition, led by the Victoria Africa Diaspora Student Association and ActionStation, has already gathered 525 signatures. This momentum reflects a united community committed to making Wellington's streets safer for all.

Please sign the petition and share it amongst your family and friends to amplify this cause. Thank you again for standing with the Smith family and for your generosity and compassion.

In solidarity,

The Blackhouse 106.1fm
