K9 Surf Rescue Dogs NZ. Dogs training to support Surf Lifeguards. Please support to get K9 Surf Rescue Dogs on our beaches. NZ first.
Nationwide
K9 Surf Rescue Dogs New Zealand is set to become a rescue and drowning prevention organisation for New Zealand's beautiful beach coastline. This research project is endorsed by Surf Life Saving New Zealand, but is not at all funded by them.
The idea behind the project is to explore the suitability, and begin to train and develop Surf Rescue Dogs on our beaches.
Dogs are currently used in other locations around the world but we would love to see NZ be the first to have fully operational Surf Rescue Dogs. The dogs will not replace any current equipment or service, but provide additional capabilities to these.
Your support will enable specific training to be provided to three of the registered dog and handler combinations. The training sectors involve, Patient recovery/ Rescue towing, Rapid deployment lessons, Working behavior lessons, and Surf interaction. It will also aid K9 Surf Rescue Dogs NZ in attaining not-for-profit, charitable status.
We are hugely passionate about this project and hope you too will share some support as one day a helping paw may come to you.
Thomas Yule, Director. Has been involved in Surf Lifesaving for 21 years, current Advanced Lifeguard, with 11 years of voluntary patrolling.
Thomas knows there are specific types of dogs that are born water rescue dogs. He asks "why not have these dogs help humans patrol our NZ beaches?" Thomas pitched the idea to Surf Life Saving New Zealand where he gained permission to trial the dogs and programme with SLSNZ services. This gained the innovation of the year award for Bay of Plenty in 2015. Thomas owns Ted, a Newfoundland that is undertaking K9 Surf Rescue Dog training in the hope of being one of our first trained dogs.
Thomas, like others, wants to see this supported and developed so K9 Surf Rescue Dogs New Zealand can offer this essential service to the NZ public soon. "What have we got to lose - it will save lives."
Note: Money raised goes directly to K9 Surf Rescue Dogs New Zealand and supports its vision and objectives only.
