KAASO Covid Relief - Update

  • KAASO Teacher’s Covid Relief Project Fund Update

      9 December 2021

Thank you so much to you all - our incredibly generous donors who have helped support the KAASO teachers through this difficult Covid time. While many schools around Uganda have been losing teachers who have gone in search of other opportunities, KAASO has been able to retain the numerous teachers who have participated in these income-generating projects – all thanks to this relief fund.

With schools due to go back in January, we are so excited that the teachers will finally be back in the classrooms doing what they do best – teaching children – but this does not mark the end of the line for these projects. They have all been designed to operate alongside the teachers’ school commitments and will continue to help supplement their incomes in years to come. These projects will help keep teachers loyal to KAASO and enable them to earn extra money to help shape the futures of their own families.

Thank you so much for the faith you have put in us and the hope you have given these teachers through an incredibly difficult time. We are all so very grateful.

Please find below an appreciation letter from Dominic on behalf of the teachers and the KAASO community.

    With thanks and love,

Emma, Dominic, Rose and the KAASO Family xxx

    To Our Beloved Donors

Re: APPRECIATION FOR COVID TEACHERS’ PROJECT SUPPORT

On behalf of the School Management Committee and Administration of St Paul KAASO Primary School, I hereby humbly forward our appreciation to you our donors for your generosity to our school staff during this difficult time of the Covid Pandemic.

The support you sent us was given to our staff to set up projects in groups according to their wish and the following are the projects that they are involved in:

The poultry project which has a team of 13 members of staff, the piggery project with a team of 15 members, the goat keeping project with 6 members, the brick/blocks making project with 6 members, the nursery bed project with 11 members and the fruit and vegetable growing project with 8 members. Some of the staff are involved in more than one project i.e. to say they cross from one project to another.

These projects have benefited the school, the staff and individual teachers with their families in the following ways:

 Retaining of teachers. All staff members involved in these projects have shown interest in working with KAASO for more years. (So many schools in the country have lost their staff as they have been taken up in other businesses during the lockdown) but most our staff are still with us.

 There has been promotion of team spirit and working together among the staff members.

 Our staff have been engaged throughout the lockdown period.

 The staff have gained skills and knowledge of sustainable Agriculture and economics.

 These projects have proved to be models in our community and district and as a result they have attracted many people to come and witness how they are being run.

All these projects are going to continue even after the lockdown and we hope to expand them to the family members of our staff.

We really very grateful and appreciative to your positive response to our call through madam Emma and we promise to work hard to sustain these projects.

    I remain yours faithfully,

    Dominic Kalinzi Mukwaya

    DIRECTOR KAASO UGANDA.

    ---

On behalf of the Management, Administration and staff of KAASO, allow me submit our appreciations to all friends who have tremendously donated to our school projects especially during this challenging time of the Covid Pandemic.

These projects have had a lot of benefits to our teachers and other staff members which include:

    • Promotion of team spirit among the staff members as they have been working together.

    • Engagement during this time when the schools are off to avoid redundance.

    • Gaining Agriculture, farm and economic knowledge and skills.

    • Sustainable income to the teaching and non-teaching staff as the school can no longer manage paying them their monthly salaries.

    • Model in the area and the District. These projects have attracted many people from the community who are coming to witness how they being carried out (these include area members of Parliament, the District Chairperson and councillors, priests, Headteachers, teachers and so many others). So, there is a lot of impact to the community.

    • We have been able to retain many staff members as they are busy and have hopes that in the near future, they will be able to harvest something.

PROJECTS CARRIED OUT AND NUMBER OF MEMBERS:

The projects that have been done by the staff include the following:

     The Poultry Project

    This project has 13 members. They keep;

Kroilers – these are multipurpose for eggs and chicken.

    Layers – for laying eggs

    Broilers – for chicken meat.

     The Piggery Project

There are 15 members involved in the project. They keep pigs for both piglet and meat production.

     The Goat keeping Project

There are 6 members involved in this project, mainly Seventh Day Adventist and Moslems who cannot keep pigs because of their religious beliefs.

 The Bricks/ blocks making project

6 members are in this project. This one is mostly for male members of staff who work with some youths in the community to produce building bricks.

     The Nursery Bed Project

11 members are in this project. We have started growing coffee and eucalyptus seedlings to plant in gardens and sell to farmers. Coffee is a main cash crop in Uganda and as a school we are looking forward to planting some plantations for future sustainability.

 The Fruit and Vegetable growing Project

9 members are involved. In this project some of our staff members have been engaged in growing watermelons, passion fruits, tomatoes and green pepper.

    SUCCESS STORIES

    1. The projects are going on well e.g. the animals on the farm are doing so well,

    2. The staff who were jobless and just moving around due to the closure of schools and lockdown during this difficult time of the Covid -19 pandemic got occupied and are so busy.

    3. Many teachers throughout the country have quit their jobs, but thanks to these projects, that has not be the case for our teachers and other staff.

    4. The on-going projects have already attracted many people from both the community around and beyond to come see how KAASO is doing these projects. Our visitors have included:

    - The District Chairperson- Mr Patrick Kintu Kisekulo,

    - The Commissioner from the Ministry of Education and Sports,

    - The Kyotera District Woman Member of Parliament,

    - The Chairperson Kabira Sub County

    - The Councillors from Kyotera District and Kabira

    - The Kings representative in the District

    - The District Inspectors of schools and many teachers from other institutions.

    5. Team spirit, the heart of belonging and economic skills has/have been promoted among the staff members.

    Conclusion

Sustaining staff during a time when the main income generating route is closed is so hard in a developing nation like Uganda. As KAASO management, we are so grateful to our supporters and donors for that hand they have rendered to us especially during this challenging time. We know ‘’we can’t do everything, but we can do something’’.

    Let blessed be your Hands.

    Dominic Kalinzi Mukwaya

    Director KAASO Uganda

Thank you so much to all of our generous donors. We are so grateful for your kind support, it means so much and is really helpful at this very difficult time.

Unfortuantely, Uganda is once again in a full nation-wide lockdown and, as of last night, the President has tightened restrictions even further. KAASO and all schools across Uganda are once again closed, making it even harder than ever before for KAASO to pay the teachers with no funds coming in. Teachers themselves are also struggling as they need to feed themselves and their families and many teachers have requested to remain at KAASO, as during the last lockdown they struggled to find food.

The need is greater than ever and we are so thankful for your support. Please help us to share this fundraiser far and wide to help keep KAASO afloat.
