Kaikohe to Indonesia 2020 is dedicated to getting this group of Northland College students to Indonesia in April!
Northland
In April 2020 three students and two teachers from Kaikohe will travel to Indonesia for 10 days to learn about the people and culture, visit schools and engage with students, develop skills in Bahasa Indonesia and gain invaluable travel and cultural experience.
We live in a small town in rural NZ. It’s not a multi-cultural location and is in a low decile region. My students will truly gain a life enriching experience by travelling to a country with a different culture, different languages, religious demographics, economic situation and much more. They will gain a new perspective, appreciation and realisation of similarities and differences that only travel can provide. They’ll engage with people of all ages including students their own age through school visits, socialising and local sight-seeing with students in Yogyakarta, Klaten (Java) and Denpasar (Bali).
In May this year I began an after school weekly Indonesian language class with these students and they are progressing very well. It’s impressive that they give up their own time and are self motivated and interested. As an extra-curricular group, there are no external motivators such as NCEA credits or certificates - they do it purely out of curiosity and personal interest. We are also building connections to the Indonesian community in Northland and had members visit us at school in June and will also attend the Indonesian community Independence Day celebration on August 17th.
We look forward to this amazing trip and experience!
