Kaine took his own life on February 3rd, after being subject to solitary confinement in the prison system. He was 18 years old.
Kaine had communicated about his poor mental health to prison staff at Christchurch Mens Prison but his words fell on deaf ears - he was dismissed and sent back to his wing. His parents had also communicated with the prison’s Chaplain prior to Kaine’s death, during which they expressed their own concerns for his wellbeing. Due to the location of the prison, the family had struggled to visit their son often and were worried for his safety. When they spoke with the Chaplain they spoke of how Kaine had attempted suicide once before while not in prison: he was terrified of going back inside and being moved to mainstream. Kaine was in the youth wing when he passed. The family have a huge amount owing so Kaine could have the funeral he deserved. Because of his death it has raised awareness of suicide in prison unfortunately for him and his family it's too little too late
Leon and Vanessa help out every one who needs it recently they lost their son to suicide in prison they have another 8 children youngest being 1 would love for the remaining costs of Kaine funeral to be lessened for them and also to hopefully get a headstone
There is still $6000 owing for the funeral and also a headstone so funds raised will be put towards those costs.
