Help Seema's team raise funds for their Exhibition "Exploring the Lives of the Girmit Women of Fiji"
Wellington
Namaste/Ni sa Bula Vinaka
We are collecting funds to pay for the costs of our exhibition now called Exploring the Lives of the Girmit Women of Fiji (previously named as Katha - Stories of the Girmit Women). Please follow our Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/groups/livesofgirmitwomenfiji. We will research about their lives, make artwork, showcase their journeys from books, and their future generations.
Girmit Women of Fiji were Indian women that were brought to Fiji during the Indenture Period to work on the Sugarcane Plantations between 1879 and 1916. they also worked on banana, rubber and copra plantations. These women are our ancestors and we are so proud to be making connections with their descendants to tell their stories.
We need funding for travel, publicity & printing, hireage of exhibition space ($1288 for a week), art supplies ($900), travel and administration/operational expenses.
This is not only an exhibition; it is also a medium through which we educate ourselves, our future generations, our Pacific brothers and sisters about the journeys of the Indian people and their connection to the Pacific. This is a first of a series of exhibitions to follow in the coming years.
We will appreciate any help we can get.

2 months to go! 10 March 2024
Hello everyone .. The exhibition is just 2 months away and I am really excited about it. Our fellow contributors have given their time voluntarily to ensure that our event is a successful one. I feel quite pleased as I have been able to make new connections and also get more people engaged to the topic while leading this project.
The exhibition dates are confirmed 19 to 26 May 2024 at New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm everyday. Address of the venue is:
1 Queens Wharf, Wellington, New Zealand
If there is anyone who is travelling from outside Wellington and would like to catch up, please get in touch.
Do follow the exhibition updates here https://www.facebook.com/groups/livesofgirmitwomenfiji and share this link with anyone you know who would be willing to donate towards our project.
Thanks
