Keep me Rolling - Smart Drive Replacement Fund

$995 of $13,000 goal
Given by 14 generous donors in 7 weeks

With recent changes in funding criteria, I am raising funds to purchase a new wheelchair motor so I can maintain my mobility & independence.

Dunedin, Otago

I am raising funds to replace my SmartDrive, a crucial piece of equipment attached to my wheelchair that provides power assistance.

For the last 9 years, I have relied on a SmartDrive unit provided by Enable (Ministry of Health). It has been a lifeline for me, saving my shoulders, arms and hands from strain and allowing me to travel distances that would be impossible manually. It is not just a motor; it is my independence. Unfortunately, my old unit has finally broken down beyond repair. I applied for a replacement, but due to the updated and stricter funding criteria recently introduced by the NZ Government and Enable, my request was declined. This leaves me without the assistive technology I have relied on for nearly a decade, and without the funds to buy a replacement privately.

Why I Need Your Help A new SmartDrive unit costs approximately $13,000. As I cannot self-fund this amount and am no longer eligible for government support, I am turning to my community for help. Getting this replacement means:

• Preserving the health of my shoulders, arms and hands.

• Regaining the freedom to go out without needing someone to push me, who most times is not available.

• Continuing to live my life with the independence I have worked hard for.

Any donation, big or small, will go directly toward purchasing a replacement SmartDrive. If you cannot donate, please share this page—it helps more than you know.

Thank you for your support.

A little more about myself   21 February 2026

Why do I need a wheelchair? My health has been poor since I had my first (of 3) stroke at 37 (resulting in my needing a walking stick). I had stage three aggressive invasive Breast Cancer at 44 and have had numerous falls resulting in severe head injuries. I have used a wheelchair since 2011 when I went toxic with the chemotherapy.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
