Help fund our legal battle to shut down the Auckland Shooting Club.
Makarau, Auckland
In 2016 someone decided to buy some farmland and start up the Auckland Shooting Club (ASC) on our less than 3kms no exit road without consulting with the existing residents.
It is approximately 1.16 kms from the internationally known Vipassana Meditation Centre, and much closer to some residents. The shooting can be heard many kilometres away, 7 days a week. Additionally, the narrow road was not constructed for the resulting extra traffic volumes which is an ongoing safety concern for the residents.
In 2016 the residents established an Incorporated Society “Keep The Peace Makarau Valley” (KTPMV) which continues to operate, and together with the Vipassana Meditation Centre, funded a court case to have the ASC shut down, all earthworks deconstructed, the buildings removed, and the land reverted back to its original state. This legal battle cost us about $500,000 and we were partially successful, although they continued to shoot illegally.
Late last year the Auckland Shooting Club owner applied for a new Resource Consent to operate. On 25th March '24 their Certification was cancelled by the Police.
We, the residents, together with the Vipassana Meditation Centre, are opposing their current Resource Consent application at a hearing scheduled for May this year. The expected costs for us to attend and provide expert witnesses, including a Barrister, is in the region of $200,000

KTPMV update 26 May 2025
Hello community
KTPMV are sharing the Hearing costs 50/50 with the Vipassana Foundation. Approximate total costs of the Hearing and expert witnesses are $165,000 however we are still short about $30,000 to meet our 50% share, which is an improvement on the $55,000 shortfall when we last reported.
We have recently been having an online garage sale of unwanted items which has helped raise some funds. If you would also like to help in that regard, please get in touch.
Based on outstanding evidence required from the ASC - their Ecology Report which must include an Ecological Management Plan - it is unlikely that a Hearing date can be scheduled until the end of August at the earliest.
The KTPMV committee decided to re-open our Givealittle Page and seek ongoing financial support from our affected community to help meet the shortfall.
ANY amount would be greatly appreciated. We MUST rid our community of the ASC and restore our peaceful lifestyles, as well as maintain the value of our properties.
Thank you again for your ongoing support.
