Keeping Former Refugee Families Warm for Winter

Started 4 weeks ago

We are wanting to obtain funding to assist our newly arriving Afghan refugee families in keeping warm and dry for winter.

Ashburton, Canterbury

Our agency provides settlement support for newly arriving former refugees to our district. We have been providing this assistance to Afghan newcomers since 2021. While newly arrived families receive support and assistance for health, housing, education and employment, we are unable to provide funds for practical needs such as warm jackets and wood for log burners. When our new families arrive they struggle to adjust to the change of climate and our very cold winters. They do not have cars and must walk or bike to English classes, shopping, school and work so it is essential that they have good quality jackets to ensure they stay warm and dry. It is important our families feel warm and comfortable as this helps with their levels of stress and ability to cope with the massive changes they experience living in New Zealand. Our service would like to be able meet these essential needs for families who arrive with limited resources. A very practical way to provide some comfort.

About us

Safer Ashburton has progressively grown since its inception in 1994 and now employs a wide range of staff across many programme areas. We also have volunteers supporting these programmes, alongside extensive community support and engagement with other agencies and providers across the district. Safer Ashburton is the largest locally-driven provider of community services in the Ashburton District.

We deliver programmes and services in response to community need, supporting vulnerable families, children, youth justice, adult offenders, and new migrants.

Use of funds

Any money donated will be specifically used to puchase warm jackets and wood for winter heating for those who lack the resources to provide for themselves.
