Vic Deals has been a Wellington institution since 2012 providing students and locals with a place to buy and sell, find accomodation,have a laugh,find lost things and keep updated with what's going on locally. We are one of the few places that isn't owned by Government or Mainstream Media Outlets and as such we allow free speech and the sharing of ideas that wouldn't necessarily have a voice.

It's an incredibly successful group in what it does, however as a business it struggles. We offer advertising rates to local Wellington businesses cheaper than Facebook itself (The annual cost to advertise with us is less than a week with Facebook direct for the same reach). We also give away over $100,000 worth of advertising to local causes a year, and for other charitable causes we offer 90% off our rates.

Facebook itself does next to nothing to allow people that run groups to monetize them in any way,shape or form. So in turn we rely on what advertising revenue we do get to keep the doors open. At present that is barely enough for half of a living wage for one employee.

With the recent rule changes from Facebook in response to the Christchurch terror attack the onus/responsibility for the moderation of content has been placed squarely on the people that run the group. What the reality of that has meant is that post approval has to be placed permanently on and every post needs to be checked. The reason for this close scrutiny is that if one of our members posts something that breaches Facebooks new rules the group itself can be deleted.

With thousands of posts per week and 695,000 comments/reactions that has meant we have needed to bring on more moderators on as it needs 24/7 attention. They are currently doing this out of the goodness of their heart and we would really like to be able to pay them, cover the full time wages properly and also grow the group to it's full potential.
