Help Kendra and Corey after motorcycle crash

  • Winter update

      3 June 2021

Kendra has started walking with crutches!! She continues with physio and potentially she may be down to one crutch in a month. She has started weight bearing exercises with 25-30kgs. She is doing above her expected milestones set by surgeons and orthopedic doctors.

Unfortunately she has a few surgeries yet to come as the medication that her surgeon was hoping for her to us and avoid the need of further surgery has been declined.

Corey has had metal wear removed from his arm and had further surgery minimize infection. He is doing physio and has constant orthopedic appointments. There is still hope he will regain use of his arm fully.

With the support of familu they have been sorting out their home to make it easier to cater to their needs. ACC have been supportive and helping with equipment and rails which should arrive soon.

On the personal side Kendra and Corey have been busy meeting their new nieces that have been born recently. They are looking for a daye to have a tangi for their precious son that was lost due to the accident.

They are excited for the future, their kids are in school, aiming to get back into the work force (eventually) and ofcourse planning their wedding!

From Kendra and Corey "Our gratitude to all those who have donated is beyond words we have been able to use this money to help with various house hold items and bills which has taken the stress off the financial strain whilst healing. So thankyou everyone for everything and we will continue our journey with you all in our thoughts and hearts 💕"

  • Autumn update

Since our last update Coreys been for hand surgery and had the rod taken out giving him movement with his wrist for the first time in months.

Kendra has a further surgery this Thursday to take a screw out of her knee.

They have been doing physio and Kendra should be weight bearing in around 2 weeks. She will then start to learn to walk again. Which she can not wait to happen.

She has also started therapy and it's helping her cope with all the trauma and adapting to life. She wanted to be open about the counselling and said..."I am not ashamed of it because it's incredible and so important!"

For those keen to know more about the journey to recovery and see some photos, women's day are running a story on them this coming week.

  • Things are on the up

We have been a little quiet over the last couple of weeks as Kendra and Corey have been settling in to life back at home with on going rehab. Corey has mastered vacuum cleaning from his wheel chair and is getting more and more use from his hand every day. Kendra underwent major surgery on her leg just before Easter. After rehab and time for her leg to heal she should be able to walk again.

The photo was taken just after Kendra received the news she had a date for her operation (which has now happened)

With the use of technology Kendra was able to watch her son attend his first swimming lesson - an emotional moment for any parent. Over the last couple of weeks their parents Pa'i and Shayne have also celebrated a significant wedding anniversary. Big love to them and Corey's family who continue to provide so much support.

  • Move to Kenepuru hospital for rehabilitation

This week Kendra and Corey have been moved to Kenepuru Hospital to start their rehabilitation treatment. They have made a short video to share with you.

Some days are better than others, some days the emotional grief is harder than their physical challenges. But they are continuing their journey and tell me how blessed they are by the kindness of the NZ public.

  • First outing in 3 weeks

      1 February 2021

Kendra and Corey were allowed to briefly leave the hospital today for the first time in 3 weeks. They were taken across the road and back. A short video of them is below.

They are managing to stay positive with the love and support of family and friends.

Further operations and rehab are on the cards, but you can hear in their voices hope for the future.

  • Week two of recovery

Kendra and Corey are both still in Hospital. Kendra has been temporarily transferred to a different hospital where she will undergo further surgery on her leg.

Although it is stressful being apart from each other they are keeping in regular contact with family members helping them to video chat. Kendra wanted to share this photo of her smiling as her son had just been in to visit her and she wants to give hope to others in the same or worse situation.

They have asked the following statement be popped on here:

"We read each and every comment you have made when making a donation to our recovery. We are so blessed and touch by all the love you have shown us - many from complete strangers.

The comments and love from those that know us and even those that don't bring tears to our eyes. Because honestly, when you go through something like this the support and love is the main thing to get you through. So we just want to acknowledge every single one of you and say thank you so much for these kind words and donations, we have such hope for your future and recovery because of all of you - and our amazing families and friends. Kendra and Corey"

  • Update on Kendra and Corey

      17 January 2021

Late last night Kendra was induced and spent today with the plastic surgeon. She may still lose her leg, we pray this is not the case

Corey continues to improve in health and has been a great support for Kendra as she comes to terms with losing her baby.

They may be transferred to Lower Hutt Hospital this coming week.

Kendra and Corey wish to thank everyone for their generous donations - Kendra says your generosity will make a real difference in their recovery. They also specifically asked that all the amazing emergency and medical staff be thanked - they are so grateful for the care they are receiving.

So SO much Aroha for you both and your families. I can’t imagine what you’re going through but know there are so many of us here watching from the sidelines, contributing and sending so much love to you all. While it’s going to be a long road to recovery, you will go through it side by side and that is a closeness no other could comprehend. I’m so sorry for the loss of your wee bub but have no doubt he will continue to be around you and guiding from afar.
