Kero needs life-saving treatment!

Papamoa, Bay Of Plenty

My heart dog, Kero, has an autoimmune disorder. Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMTP).

This condition is where the body’s immune system, which normally fights infection, starts to damage and destroy platelets. Platelets are cells required to clot blood and prevent bleeding. If enough platelets are destroyed then spontaneous bleeding can occur. If a large quantity of blood is lost then anaemia (having a low red blood cell count) can also be present.

With daily testing, we have discovered Kero has reached this stage.

Kero is on steroids to suppress his immune system's response, but we need to buy him some time to give the medication a chance to take effect. With the amount of blood he has been losing, the only option is a blood transfusion to restore some much-needed platelets.

This Christmas, Kero would celebrate his 11th birthday, and this is still young for his breed. Kero is still so full of life (people still regularly ask if he's a puppy!) and deserves to make the most of it. He is a huge part of our family. He is my world.

As we all know, the cost of living is insane right now, we are all feeling the pinch. My family and I have been doing all we can to keep on top of our vet costs but with bills coming in constantly, we are seeking help. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

We thank you for taking the time to read part of our story.

Grief  8 November 2023

Kero took his final breaths just before 8am yesterday morning.

We had finally managed to get him booked in to see a specialist in Auckland for 8:30am. Kero wasn't stable enough to cope with the travel.

My family and I feel so robbed of precious time with our darling boy. He didn't deserve any of this.

We continue to be overwhelmed with all of your love and support. We are so sorry we can't pass on positive news to you all.

Over this short period, I maxed out my Afterpay account and received a loan from a friend to aid in covering the medical costs. If anyone is in a position to donate, despite Kero's passing, please know that our family would be eternally grateful. We are just trying to keep our heads above water.

As stated in my previous update, if donations exceed what is needed to cover our debts then this would go towards Kero's aquamation and urn. Any other funds would be used to pay it forward to another animal/s in need.

This page will continue to be active until, what would have been, Kero's 11th birthday.

Again, I apologise I couldn't bear better news.

Our hearts are shattered beyond explanation. Please, hold your furbabies close, never take a moment for granted. Tomorrow isn't promised.

Rest in peace, my angel, Kero. There won't be a day that goes by that you aren't on my mind and in my heart. x

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this, it's awful when our pets are unwell and it breaks my heart seeing Kero like this - I hope he can get better and live a long happy life with his family ❤️

Best wishes. My boy had this, it was horrible seeing him so sick. Thankfully, his transfusion worked followed by eight months of medication and regular blood tests. He got sick at eight and is now going on 13!
