I have been fortunate enough to be selected for a placement in Sri Lanka, volunteering in the mental health sector.
Wellington
My passion in life has always been mental health. So, i've decided to put down the books and put my passion to use. In conjunction with PMGY, I will be assisting in psychiatric hospitals, shadowing professionals and running sessions in community development centres in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s suicide rates are amongst the highest globally according to the World Health Organisation and mental health needs in Sri Lanka today are as high as anywhere else in the world.
In more recent times the country as a whole is moving away from the traditional cultural stigma that had always been attached to mental health in Sri Lanka.
Whilst integrating mental health into the primary care of Sri Lanka’s public health system and private sector still remains challenging, more recently there has been encouraging signs that right tracks are being made to do this.
So, I want to join Sri Lanka on this journey, and help in providing the mental health care the country really needs.
The placement offers me a special opportunity to gain important skills to excel in my chosen career path. I am passionate about providing better mental health internationally, and am so excited to have the opportunity to use my skills where it is needed most.
Funds raised will be used to cover the costs of the placement, as well as providing resources to create activities for patients in hospitals.
