Help the Kiribati pingpong team reach the Olympics
Wellington
Yuki is a Japanese volunteer who moved to the island of Kiribati to teach I-Kiribati to play pingpong. His goal: to take the Kiribati pingpong team to the Olympics.
When I saw his video on BBC a few weeks ago, I knew immediately that I wanted to support him. Watch the 2-minute video here and I'm sure you'll feel the same: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-35203810
I have contacted Yuki and asked him what the team most needs. His answer: pingpong bats. My colleague will be visiting Kiribati in April and would like to take at least 10 quality pingpong bats over. Rebel Sport have agreed to give us a 15% discount on their bats.
I will be sure to share lots of photos on Facebook!
I have been fortunate to visit Kiribati 10 times over the past few years. Kiribati is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean with approximately 110,000 people. It is one of the least visited countries in the world.
One of things that always stands out for me during my visits is the huge number of young people (57% of the population is under 25) and the reality that there is very little to do on the main island of South Tarawa.
While this is a small project, I believe that Yuki is doing something significant. He is creating an opportunity for young people and he is giving them a goal to work towards.
And who doesn't love pingpong?!
