The children of the Compassion Ethiopia project in Meki, Ethiopia and in Bogani, Maasai Mara, Kenya, desperately need your kindness.
Getting food, basic supplies, paying household related fees and attending school has become nearly impossible over the last 18 months for most families. Both countries strongly rely on tourism which has come to a standstill with the current Covid pandemic. Many who used to have jobs lost them, the ones who didn’t, now struggle beyond imagination. Extreme weather changes caused by climate change take the hardship these communities are experiencing to yet another level.
Children cannot get nutritious food and basic health care which has long lasting consequences. Being able to go to school and get an education instead of being forced in to a child marriage is becoming a distant dream for most village girls. Africa is full of smart, talented, intelligent people and the continent wants to help itself. They just need the opportunity.
I am asking for your support to provide for the children and their families. Together we can make dreams come true!
Kumneger (Kemi) M., who works for Compassion Ethiopia as a child sponsor coordinator, will receive the funds in Ethiopia. He will distribute the donations among the families in the Meki project.
Kids and families in a parallel project in Maasai Mara, Kenya will further benefit from the funds raised. Benson Leparan S. will distribute the funds to the community of Bogani for food, clothes and medicine. Despite losing his job himself, Benson continues to work tirelessly to ensure his community has enough supplies. He is also working on a 'Days for Girls' project enabling young women in his community to attend school. You can follow his progress on the linked Facebook page.
*Some background information on the current situation in Ethiopia and my sponsor kids*:
Pictured are two remarkable children called Yosef and Misgana (together with Misgana’s mum and older sister Metsni). They are my sponsor children in Ethiopia. War and Covid-19 has gravely affected their lives and their country. For a nation solely reliant on coffee exports and tourism, finding food and other basic living necessities is scarce. A few lucky people with jobs, lost them, resulting in many families going hungry. Prolonged delays with international aid, increased inflation and former totalitarian governments left the country with little infrastructure or exports.
Getting help for Yosef's sick mother is now critical as she battles cancer and pending homelessness. Misgana's mother lost her job when schools closed and the burden has fallen to my sponsor children to find income, food and resources to help their mothers and siblings survive.
The war started in November 2020 when rebels (members of the former regime), took over the military bases along the northern Ethiopia's border with Eritrea. The conflict continues to ravage the country with the Ethiopian government spending any funding there is to keep the rebels from killing innocent civilians. There is nothing left for innocent children caught up in the bloodbath. Humanitarian organisations have been forced to leave the area and northern Ethiopia is now considered on the edge of famine.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for joining me on this journey in the name of humanity, compassion and good will.
I have been sponsoring kids in Ethiopia through Tear Fund NZ for 17 years. I lived in Ethiopia, spent time with the families and volunteered in a school building project in Kenya, where I understood the gravity of their daily lives. Questions welcome.
Funds raised will be distributed between the families to help them source food, pay rent, pay for medical bills as well as other necessary living expenses in Meki, Ethiopia.
Medical bills covered by your kindness 25 March 2022
Dearest supporters of our awesome cause. Some time ago I received very sad news from my son Yosef in Ethiopia, that his mum was battling cancer. She has undergone one surgery few weeks ago and got her foot amputated. Due to an infection she is about to undergo another one. Thanks to your kind donations, I was able to send Yosef funds to cover the medical costs. I can't even begin to explain how much it means to him and his mum. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart and I will keep you posted about the progress.
